15 year removed rule

It sounds like something a bunch of old duffers would put into place to make sure that we don't demand that they add people willy nilly and lessen the prestige of it, but dammit, sometimes guys just need to be honored and it's clear as day that they do. This is the case with both Georges and Monte (I'd love to see Melvin honored in that way too, but that one will take more time I think, if it happens).

It shouldn't be so damn exclusive that recruits coming in weren't even born when anyone up there played.

Well pickings are pretty thin if you go back a few years basically since Eustachy left till Fred came. I agree Georges and Monte are easy picks after that it is a lot of" my favorite player" during a time frame.

Maybe there are exceptions, I read it in this article about Monte:

http://www.mlive.com/sports/flint/index.ssf/2017/03/monte_morris_the_flint_recruit.html

"At Iowa State, there is two criteria for a player to have his jersey retired: 1) Must be inducted into the Hall of Fame and 2) 15 years removed."

Pretty sure they just made that up. If you read the article, it says that Monte gave his speech and then played the game. We all know that the game was played first and then the speeches occurred.

I'm not saying it's not true, but this article is the first time that I've heard about a 15 year wait, and Chris and Hines have both discussed requirements in the past. So I'm not going to spend too much time freaking out or arguing about it.

Oh, we're on the Internet? Well, in that case...

I just don't get the point of waiting at all. I mean, why not honor them now instead of later?

You gotta wait at least a few years to gain perspective on a guy. Otherwise you'd have people clamoring every season for whoever the most popular senior is. And not selecting somebody who was anywhere close would be a much more direct snub. You can argue 15 years is too much, but I don't think you can argue 0 years is too much.

I would guess the reason for the wait is to ensure that the player's legacy is still strong after 15 years. In the current moment, we all love the current players on the team and may want to rush to put them in the HOF or retire their jersey. But by waiting a long time, if the players legacy is still strong, then it is worthy of being in the HOF or getting their jersey hanged.

Fred Hoiberg had his jersey retired two years after college. Is this 15 years a new rule?

The HOF was in its infancy and didn't have its first class until 1997, so that would have been after Fred had his jersey retired and they were likely still working out the rules. I like the 15 year rule for the HOF and retiring of the jersey.

so yo want to wait till 2031 to retire Niang's jersey?

I agree that you can't just do it the next season, like Virginia did because that's just too soon, but I think 5 years is plenty. There is zero question Georges and Monte will be up there.

The reason I think 5 years is the answer is because of players like Ejim. I loved him and he was invaluable to us, but was he number in the rafters worthy? Not as clear cut as Georges and Monte, but he's right there, and as a few years have passed, we get to look in hindsite at how valuable he was, not just as a player, but a leader. Being Big 12 POY doesn't hurt his case at all either.

I think this is a pretty good rationale but 15 years is too long. Wait something like 3 or 5 years before a player becomes eligible, then.

We should know that these rules are not created with a player like Georges Niang in mind (who is a 100% no doubt lock to get #31 hung from the rafters) but more like a Melvin Ejim who many people wanted up there but many others disagreed with and perhaps some of those opinions may change one way or another with the benefit of some more time before deciding.

Stupid question, but does your jersey have to be retired to be hung in Hilton? Honestly don't know.

That would explain Hoiberg's 2 year situation. 32 just wasn't retired.

I have no issues waiting for Niang and Monte. This sort of honor shouldn't be rushed no matter how deserving.
The students in 2030 won't know who they are. There will be cyclone fans that won't be on this earth anymore in 15 years. I bet they would like to see their jerseys get retired. 15 years is an absurd amount of time.

Is this really something people care about? 5, 10, 15, whatever. 15 years allows for time to get perspective on a player and also removes the immediacy of elevating them in the heat of the moment their senior season. It certainly isn't the only answer. You could do less. You could do more if you wanted. It's just an arbitrary number. But honestly who cares? I doubt anybody who has had their jersey hung (or will have it hung) gives it a single thought. And I'd be amazed if any recruit gives it a single thought either.

Waiting a few years (3? 5?) to let emotions clear is probably good. Waiting longer than that, the only reason I can think of is to make sure your guy doesn't go off the rails in personal life. E.g. is Ray Rice's jersey retired somewhere? That may not be the kind of press you want. Usually after 30 people are fairly stable (OJ being a notable exception).

2nd topic - in another thread on this, someone said UNC hangs jerseys with the name and number, without "retiring" the number entirely. So they have a ton of jerseys for great players, and a handful of exceptional players where the number is retired. I assume this is true and correct, but it might be a way to split the baby here. Maybe you hang a jersey almost annually, but only retire one every generation or so. I could live with that.

Most students in 2020 won't know who Melvin Ejim was (as one example). I get your point (which has some merit), but there has to be some sort of time frame to let the legend grow, and I'm OK with the 15 years where you would prefer it be shorter.

ISU currently only retires jerseys not numbers.
