Big Man Recruiting - Prohm's luck will change

I don't think he is russian but that is besides the point. he is actually a really good player this year. Look at what he has done in the big 12. 28 vs KU, 14 v WVU, 19 v. Texas and 25 against ISU.
And a lot more teams wanted Carter than Vlad. Blue bloods wanted Dinglebury. Point is you can't look at a junior big and say we should've used a scholly on that guy. Unfortunately you probably burn 2-3 scholarships on fringe guys to find one that is solid. So for next years class, which 2 would you give up to maybe get a Vlad type player?

What I find strange is all the ISU fans that just want some jack wagon big to come in and foul people like that is some great contribution to the team.

I've had season tickets for many years in Hilton and have moved multiple times and I think I've sat by one fan who thought this. It seems like 25% of the posters on here though think we need some monster guy in the middle to get 5 fouls to show the other team some toughness like free throws don't count

Then come on here and cry about how we never shoot as many FT's as the other team makes like all the great Tom Davis Iowa teams of the late 80's/early 90's.

If it is a difficult thing to recruit rebounders and serviceable post players to ISU, then Prohm needs to hire an assistant who can coach up smaller guys to be serviceable at these positions. It's not easy to play those positions as an undersized guy, but there are techniques to help make things go better, and the ISU players who are having to fill these positions, particularly Burton, don't seem to know how to handle bigger players. This has been a problem for years.

The TCU Russian kid had some nice moves, but he was no superstar. He was tall, and ISU seemed to have no real idea how to disrupt him. Also not sure why ISU wouldn't try Young and Holden on him earlier in the game for a just a few minutes anyway. It becomes tough to win when the opponent is just abusing the post. But Hoiberg was the same way in just sticking with the rotation and somehow hoping that things will change.
I am gradually thinking Prohm is not a risk taker even the situation begs change.

After watching small ball this year we are the size of a mid major at best. A thug like Edozie would be nice. We need some butt banging for those rebounds.if

To be successful Prohm needs to be a good evaluator and separate the Carters from the Vlads.

Burning scholarships on guys that can defend and rebound against size is no different or riskier than trying to get good enough backcourt and wing play.

The desire to promote this mythical false dilemma is amusing. I am surprised at the level of insecurity about Prohm that drives it. If Prohm can improve his non-guard recruiting to match every modern ISU sans Hoiberg he'll do fine.

Did you think this way Thursday morning as well?

I have not been a fan of him this season one bit. Not liking what I see out of the offense. Players are not being utilized to their strengths. I've said it multiple times, but I hate seeing players who are right handed shoot falling left. One of the toughest shots in basketball. Too much one on one, but it's getting better (mainly Naz, Monte, and Burton). I have loved the efforts out of Jackson and young. This team is a huge work in progress... Gonna sound crazy but I expect next year's team to look better at this point than this team.

People appreciate good offense over good defense that's for sure

Go find a guard equivalent of a Diallo, who could've went to any blue blood he wanted but logged mostly DNPs. Any coach will tell you bigs take longer to develop and are less likely to play up to their HS recruiting ranking. This isn't a myth. A guy like Vlad or one of Northwesterns bigs would be nice to have this year. But people are looking at these guys as upperclassman and asking why we didn't offer them without knowing that there were probably a few whiffs along the way in terms of recruiting bigs. So again, who in next years class should we pull a Scholly from to give a 150 rated big body?

How good has our defense been? It

Nice anecdote, but it's amiss and meaningless. The fact is coaches of all teams at the level we would like to get to still sign good big men.

It's all relative. Every position has whiffs and the standard of play for guards on an elite team is very high.

Our defense is 25th in the entire country so I would say our defense has been good. We actually have a better defense than Kansas

Relative yes. Equal across positions absolutely not. Even for arguments sake lets assume my point and the conventional wisdom among coaches is wrong and wings have equal chance as bigs as being busts or late bloomers. In a traditional lineup you need the same number of wings as bigs. We know there's a lot larger supply of wings and combo guards as there are traditional 4s and 5s. That scarcity leads to bigs getting overvalued, this a higher likelihood they don't pan out.

Our schedule has been really soft so far. I agree it's way better than it's been for the past several years, and they play hard, but we won't have a top 25 defense for long now that we're in conference play.

We may, but you can still see a lot of laziness on our defense. I have been impressed with our hedging on screens. One thing I always hate, regardless of team, is contesting the ball on shots and not putting a hand in the shooters face.

That's adjusted to our schedule

Always respect your opinion Twins, but giving up over 55% percent the last three games isn't good defense. Forcing turnovers at a much higher rate but it doesn't seem to offset the interior defense.

Really frustrating watching this team have to labor on offense. I know Charlie Henry and Fred were elite in their "specials" planning (quick hitters and out of bounds) but this staff has really left something to be desired in those areas.

We've played poor defense three games in a row but to say we've been bad defensively this year is the opposite of true. Time off to actually practice instead of rest and scout will help a lot I think. Frustrating game though, I hate losing at home but still stand by my 7-2 at home and 3-6 on the road prediction. I think they're close to figuring it out

I just want a guy over 6'8 that can rebound and play a little on the offensive side of the ball. Does not have to be special there it can't be that hard to find someone like that. A guy 6'8+ should be able to get a ball when it's a miss and make a hook shot.
