Random Thoughts IX (The first 8 were probably better)

Interview #1 of 3 tomorrow and the intel I am getting is I have to try to not get one of these three positions. Good thing since my wife will be losing two kids from the daycare at Christmas. They are moving two exits further into town and don't want to drive out here. Kind of frustrating since every other family lives at least that far if not farther and still drives up here.

Saw a Christmas card by the computer with an old college friends name on it. Wife mails out the cards, I probably would sent 4-5 the week of if it was something I did. My wife has never met this friend, I haven't seen them since her wedding in 1994. How long do people send cards to friends they haven't seen. In my wife's defense, we get a card from this friend also.

I have another that I haven't seen since this other friends wedding around 1998, only time my wife has met them also.

I've got about 5-6 people that I exchange cards with, it's the only way we stay in touch. I enjoy hearing from them. But to each their own.

I don't mind getting the cards. Didn't know if it was odd that that is the only communication with them. Not that I dislike them now, just seem busy and drifted away. Plus it turns out I have a lot more female friends from college than men (excluding lawman of course but he doesn't send me a card) and it would feel odd to go catch up with them by myself and figure my wife would be bored.

What's so different?
Granted, I'm comparing it to what my college experience was like, so this may not be true regarding Iowa State, but here are a few things off the top of my head (and I'll admit this is a generalization):
1.) The classes are going to probably be different.
2.) I think the student body will be very different (both in terms of demographics as well as those your age. I think among the students your age it will feel more like a fifth year of high school)
3.) You won't be in the dorms or rushing a fraternity. The dorms and living on campus are a major part of that initial college experience, and I think not having that will also make it feel more like high school.
4.) Culture. A place like DMACC is going to have a very different culture than Iowa State, and you can't really replicate that. Plus, even if you had friends who would be starting Iowa State at the same time and you hung out with them, there's still that divide and they will be experiencing things differently than you will. They are Iowa State students and can experience that culture in a way that you and I can't as outsiders.

I can only speak about it from the (for back of a better term) college student side as opposed to community college side, but Wooster and Orrville (a town nearby) each had a two year college. My experience was vastly different than theirs in terms of classes, students, living in dorms, and the general culture and I don't think you can say that our experiences were similar just because we were all college students.

Not old like us. Old for an 18/19year old is one legal age to drink.

Speaking of old, I opened up a really old Sears tool box that was rusting in the back of my garage tonight. Tools went into a tool cabinet decades ago. So what was in the old tool box? Some misc hose clamps, two thermostat gaskets for a '72 Nova and points for a '72 Nova 250ci straight six.

What the big deal is and why bother. But I grew up dirt poor and that seems more like a middle class tradition, so maybe it just wasn't ingrained in the culture?

We didn't do many growing up. We were far from well off ourselves. Mom hasn't done any since I was like grade school. I didn't do them myself.

Today is going to suck.

I know an old plumber you can work for. Will have to do 90% of the work, put up with him smoking in the pickup, crazy driving, listen to him as he nearly hacks up a lung, and sit with a seat that is pushing forward due to a load of stuff behind the seat, but it's out of the wind.

I ordered pizza last night (Papa John's 50% off after a Cyclone win). I had to pick up a kid when it was being delivered, so told the oldest there was a $5 on the bench to give the delivery person for a tip. I had paid by CC online, but always like to give a cash tip. I forgot to warn her she might need to sign the receipt. So the delivery person asks her to sign and she sees the tip line on the receipt. She adds another $5 on the receipt. I don't know if the delivery people keep their own tips, but that guy made $10 on a $8 pizza. :) Merry Christmas!

Just checked yesterday's mail. There is a 4 page newsletter Christmas card in there. All about the kids and their vacations, even a column on the family pets. Every year they do this, wife's college roommate. We get a mid summer one also to keep track of the winter sports. Can't they just email the thing?
