Don't like it, looked great before. When they talked about doing new lights in Hilton, I didn't realize they were going to make it look like the Octogon, Carver Arena, or the Knapp Center. Sometimes I'm not sure why some things need be changed.

I was in section 228, second row from the top last night. FWIW I didn't notice a change in lighting until I read complaints in the threads. I think it'll be good for the atmosphere if we can dim them for player intros. I think it's crazy to say a darker arena will result in less cried involvement because people can't be seen. Nobody thinks that Hilton is intimidating because of the view of the crowd, it's all about the noise, which the new lighting will not impact.

It really washes out the crowd. It's not as bad as a Lakers game. But Cyclone alley won't be a visible on tv.

Was it darker in the 90's/early 00's? I remember seeing Tinsley's senior year vs. Texas Tech and remember it being generally dark in the upper portions.

If they go undefeated at Hilton this season, this conversation needs to end.

IMO it looks more like a hockey game that a basketball game. The lights reflect off of the floor nicely but the crowd looks very dark and is minimized in comparison to what it used to be. I do think it will look better on TV, however.

Yesterday was the unofficial beginning of the season at Hilton. I was really pumped to step foot in the building to see all the changes. I was at Hilton Madness and saw the lighting was dim until it was lit up for the scrimmage. During the Exhibition game, I was waiting for the lighting to come on, but nope, never came on. I'm usually all for changes to Hilton, but this change was not for the better. I think it really took away from the environment. I hope this was just an exhibition thing and not a permanent thing, but who knows. Anyone else think this as well or is it just me?

I liked it, made things easier to see from the balcony.

TV networks only want a certain portion of rows around the court to be illuminated, around 1/3 from the floor up, with the seats the rest of the way up darker. LED gives brighter and more even light, but the real kicker is how precisely they can be directed and controlled to achieve this. Pretty impressive.

It was awesome being able to see the crowd go crazy on a big dunk or go ahead three. As long as it doesn't make people lethargic I can deal with it. I haven't seen it in person yet, but I wasn't a fan seeing it on TV. Looked like Wells Fargo Arena.

I installed LED lights in an arena. The power savings is incredible. The AD is going to save a lot of money on utility costs. The ROI is so quick on a purchase like that - it is dumb to not do it.

Just wondering, how many of you did it take to change those lights?

I thought it looked B.A. I've often wondered why ISU was one of the few to not adopt the brighter court/dimmer seating and actually thought it made us seem behind the times.

Most of you sitting in the arena circle are fat, ugly, country-looking bumpkins anyway. (I can say that because I'm fat and ugly too.) Darkening your seats will only make Hilton look better to recruits.

A few of you said at the game you didn't notice a difference, but those on tv did.

It very well could be the camera making it appear much darker in the seating. If the playing surface is dramatically brighter than it has been in the past, the iris on the camera would have to close down a bit, making those already in the shaded sections, even darker.

Even with the comparison pics on the last page, it could still be the same thing happening.

Just a speculation.

Testifying
I was at the game noticed right away, and told my wife that I thought Hilton felt like more of an NBA arena style lighting now.
Only problem I had was not seeing the NCAA banner drop! (Yes I know it was an exhibition)

Also I would think these LEDs will make the possibility of court graphics much easier of ISU installs one of those.

I preferred it how we used to do it, but I don't really care or think it matters. It's better than being super bright like at WVU or one of the UConn arenas. It just looks weird when then whole arena is bright as day.

On the call in show, Jamie mentioned that they will now be able to do different things with dimming the lights and maybe changing up the intros.

I've had seats in 234 row 11 for 4 years, it was no darker up there than it ever has been.

Looking forward to seeing the intros they'll be able to put together with these

The way BB is broadcast on TV now (started by ABC/ESPN), the viewers at home really get no feel or appreciation for the crowd atmosphere. There is very little (relative to what it used to be) crowd noise added to the audio, and as you mentioned above, the majority of the crowd is darkened out on the video.

In another thread I posted an old NBA on NBC Lakers clip from the early years of Staples, before ABC took over the NBA broadcasts. Much different, and IMO, much better than what we see now. The crowd was well illuminated and well represented in the audio. Marv Albert was drowned out by the crowd noise on the buzzer beater shot by Horry, as it should be, because Marv doesn't really matter at that instant. The crowd was well visible in the background going crazy (which is not typical of a Lakers crowd).

Today, you hear a game announcer comment on how loud or how crazy the crowd is at a certain point of a game, but it really doesn't really sound or look any different from any other part of the game.

Prohm said the players like it better. Thinks it makes for a better shooting background or something like that. Checkmate...it's better this way.

I can certainly see that darkening out the crowd makes for a better a better shooting background. It will also be less intimidating for the opponent...
