I'm winded just going from my door to my car. I'm regretting this gym thing already.

I'm exhausted after reading this.

isn't the weather supposed to be pretty nasty in the KS region today? I was actually reading in the paper yesterday about how the weather service is trying to figure out the right way to warn people. Like with today's weather, they could tell last Thursday things were likely to be bad. But how do you warn people in advance without crying wolf or them having enough warning of a tornado that they leave their safe building and try to outrun it in a car, etc. Was very interesting. They were working with some social media experts to try and figure out the right balance.

They said on the news that schools are canceled in OK because of the threat of tornados.

That seems to go too far.

It is a heavily debated topic that is basically a no win scenario. No matter what you will have those that will pull one model run and go with it (the weather threads on here for example). A lot of people have a hard time grasping something that is not perfect or constant and thus gripe loudly when what they hear does not play out.

This is also heavily debated. Something like 10 years ago a principal in Mississippi (I think) kept kids in school and after hours I believe because a tornado was heading right for them. Multiple kids died and he took a lot of heat for it. The flip side of it is what are those kids situations at home and how many people under 18 are going to heed warnings and seek appropriate shelter. Probably less than 50%.

Sadly there is no right answer. Just like do you try and outrun a tornado in your car.

This. Every situation is different.

I don't really agree with sending kids home from school early/cancelling school. The chance of any particular point being hit is very very low, but school buildings aren't necessarily the safest places to take shelter. If you send kids home early, there will be many that ignore the weather or don't have proper shelter, putting them at risk, not to mention the need for parents to figure out if they have to leave work to watch them or try to find someplace for them to go ($$$). The answer IMO is creating schools with safer shelter areas, in the case that one does get hit it will better protect the students against all but the most deadly EF4/EF5's, but of course that costs money.

Weather warnings and the social response to them are pretty darn interesting. I should have went into that field of work. :twitcy:

I prefer catsup because it seems more exotic.

I prefer catsup because it's made with real cats, so you know it's good.

bigwigs in town and came through our lunch thing that I was helping with. CEO chatted with me a little bit. He recognized me but couldn't remember name - we've talked 2-3 other times as my department (and myself) have been involved in some very high priority projects. Plus team leader is sometimes in on their meetings but she just had the baby. So he asked my name again and he repeated it back wrong, so I was like "yep, "correct pronunciation"' and he came back by later and said thanks 'wrong name'. I'm like crap, he was making an effort to remember it and now it's going to be like that coworker who still thinks my name is an amalgam of mine and a former coworker's and calls me that every time he sees me.

Those who know my real name, he replaced the L with an R. I'll say close enough.

Better correct him. Walk up and say, " much name is _____, not _____, you *****!"
