7)Hawks vs 2) 'Nova

So, I didn't watch this game, but from what I can gather the final score seems closer than how bad it really was?

Oh yes.

The First half was an absolute clinic by Villanova. At one point early in the second half they were up by 35. But then they went like 8 minutes without scoring because they stepped off the gas.

The first half was the equivalent of the USA vs Nigeria game in the olympics 4 years ago.

yes. Nova was up 30 when they stopped trying and ran clock.

I'd like to sincerely thank Gessell, Woodbury, and Uthoff for almost always being a bit worse (and in a lot of cases, a lot worse) than Iowa State. Remember 3 years ago when Iowa came into the season nationally ranked and everyone in this state's media was fawning over them and then they played their way almost into the NCAA? Or this year when on Super Bowl Sunday, everyone thought Iowa was going to be the overall number 1 seed?

Every year, I thought maybe this will be the year Iowa is better than us in basketball. It's bound to happen sometime. But those 3 made sure it didn't happen on their watch. it's hard to pick which win over Iowa is better. Mikey missing FT's at the end? Or Iowa State without (at the time) a key player taking it to Iowa at Carver. Or a 22 point comeback complete with Iowa blowing an 8 point lead in a minute or something. It is hard to decide what Georges Niang troll job was better. The kiss? The cup of coffee? The It's a Cyclone State? The subtle jab this year? All so good and all so perfect.

I'll end on a serious note though....Uthoff is probably a better athlete than Georges. Obviously he is not a better player. But I've never watched someone play that seems to enjoy it less than Uthoff. It's sort of sad to see. Georges has worked really, really hard, but I don't think anyone can watch him and not think that he just hasn't had a blast playing college basketball. I'm glad that Fred and Steve were able to create an environment that he could do that in. And I'm glad that Georges is who is is.

Definitely Gessell ******* his pants at the free throw line. That started the three year spiral of that team not being able to close out tight games.

In the first half Nova had 3 separate 8-0 runs, all came in the last 12 minutes of the half...it was close for a the first 5 minutes or so and then it got away from the Hawks fast.

They'd be crazy to fire him. He's the best coach they've had in years. Anyone remember Todd Lickliter, or the Alford years? Fran's better than both of those guys put together. Of course you can never underestimate the demands of Iowa fans.

He's gone (no firing).

But, but, but...the Hawks won the second half. They had Villanova right were they wanted them. :wideeyed:

I actually heard this today. Tavern Hawk.

Don't give ISU too much credit there. Iowa sucked at that in 2012-13, too, which is why they missed the NCAA tourney that year. They lost 7 games by 4 points or less (2-7 on the year), including games against Indiana (who won the B1G that year), two against MSU, @Purdue, @Wisconsin and @Minnesota (back when Minnesota was actually ranked).

I'm sure you did. Sarcasm and cynicism levels run pretty high in games as bad as that one.

Iowa exceeded my expectations of how they would play against Villanova. You have to admit they far surpassed the coaching or athletic ability they possess.
