This poop gold 49er/Notre Dame wannabe shade is absolutely terrible. Can you imagine wearing a shirt that color?

LOVE it as an old time throwback uni with the stripe down the middle and we should do it again soon, but dear lord not as a regular option.

If we ever do a true gold helmet, the I-STATE needs to be stenciled. See below. The rendition a few posts back is a horrid.

What is this worst ideas ever for $200, alex?

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Until I see a picture of you dressed in what you think looks good I won't be taking any fashion advice.

Every person in this thread wanting yellow is either single or gets dressed by his wife daily.

I never said anything about it being yellow..

No one compliments LSU on their uniforms. The only reason people give them a pass is because they are good.

Yellow hat or yellow helmet... it's all ugly.

ndsu ugly....Iowa State was constantly made fun of because of those ugly yellow helmets. No one makes fun of the uniforms looking like usc except cyclone fans and those people think yellow is attractive.

ISU hasn't had gold/yellow helmets in 20 years and never during the internet message board era. Are you even old enough to remember that? I was in high school when DMac switched to cardinal helmets and attended many many games before that time. I also lived among many Hawk and Husker fans during the tornado and ****** Cyclone helmet days and don't ever remember anyone making fun of yellow helmets. I've heard plenty of fans of other teams rip on copying USC, hell even ESPN did a bit on it the first year the current uni's were worn.

the whole apparel aspect of this, nike or otherwise, has a lot to do with the colors. the color of gold that would look best on helmets or pants or whatever may be achievable on the field but the result for consumers wouldnt be anywhere close because it would basically get rounded down to the closest 'gold' and would litter the crowd with even more evident brand confusion. gold is definitely the hardest to match and has the fewest options in the apparel world. even though they all have different official colors, youll see the same gold shirt for wichita state, notre dame, mizzou, west virginia, etc. grey/silver is the same way but nobody notices because its easier to blend in and look good regardless. kstates official grey/silver is actually a metallic pantone ink color which obviously doesnt work/isnt achievable on 99% of applications.

unfortunately, the further iowa state strays from what colors are common, the more we will hurt ourselves. even when schools try to distance themselves by focusing on their red/cardinal/scarlet color, theres only so many options out there and iowa state isnt going to get someone like nike to make isu-specific decisions the way the do for, say, texas. theres plenty of iowa state apparel out there that looks more like they sewed our logo on something made for minnesota or south carolina or alabama etc. because they split the difference in all the colors.

white or black or grey are not legitimate options as true 'secondary' colors; we cannot take the field in cardinal/white or gold/white or cardinal/grey and expect that to help (or make sense). oklahoma doesnt have options...texas doesnt have options...michigan doesnt have options...notre dame throws green in there because theyre irish. plenty of schools have virtually the same colors, thats why its important to set yourself apart with a unique look. we currently do not have a unique look.

thanks for this.

when ISU first got the new logo our merchandise was about 5 different shades of red. Anywhere from bright ketchup red to a dark maroon on "personalized jerseys". as much as i like a more gold shade your point makes perfect sense. we finally have a standard red color across all brands and retailers after 9 years.

I beg to differ.

this just proves our marketing/ "eye on cy" department doesn't know what they are doing. why would you ever approve merchandise with different colors?

I think the problem is that they are pretty much all different brands. The Nike jacket (I think) at the top, and the Nike hat at the bottom look pretty consistent, and it's the color we want.

that's my point. the brand shouldn't matter because they are standard colors. we should only license apparel to brands that can color match.

This is absolutely correct. The colors we have now look good on merchandise, and despite what some here think, look pretty good on the field and the court. I dont hear any complaining about the gold on the basketball jerseys, or on the floor in Hilton. It is only the football jerseys. We need to stick with the colors and branding that we have now and give it some time for people to develop an association between the logo and who ISU is, that wont happen if we change up the our branding every 5 to 10 years.

If we are going to change something about our look, it is going to be the jersey design. What we have now is generic, and doesnt do anything to set us apart. The LSU stripes are boring, the 3 stripes down the helmet are over done, the pants look the same as they have for the last 30 years. ISU will never stand out from the crowd by doing what everyone else has already done.

these brands arent going to exhaust their resources at the mill to make sure the trim on a south carolina jacket is different than the trim on the alabama jacket, its just not going to happen. the closest to this happening is when schools use colors so unique that there arent many (if any) colors that are similar enough to pass, and even then youll STILL not get consistency (check out texas team shop or tennessee). green is another tough color that there is never consistency to if youre a school like marshall or north texas. theyre what i think of as crayola-crayon green but its like 'hmm, we have this more of a forest green (miami) or slightly darker yet green (baylor) material we could use or we have this slightly bluer-kelly green (michigan state) material...' and half the time they all end up with the same treatment anyway.

thats just not going to happen unless you want about 1/10th as much merchandise available, which licensing departments dont want. if every school was able to have that control, the apparel companies would lose a ton of money because then theyd have to manufacture/store/print hundreds of colors of ink, dye, thread etc.

we cant even achieve a look that makes it appear as though our football uniforms and letter jackets came from the same school, theres no way we restrict licensing to anyone.

The I-State logo just looks like crap on helmets, unless it is stenciled. And the sooner we all realize this, the better. The only logos in sports that look good on helmets are the one-color simple logos. Such as Iowa's, Texas', Oklahoma's, etc. IF we use the I State, even on the current helmets, its needs to be a one colored stencil to look good. The trim around the I-State is just horrific

And that's why I said we need to go to a White Helmet. It's looks terrible now because it's a red and yellow I State logo on a red helmet with a little yellow outline...lmao. How stupid can u get marketing and uniform people? Or black helmet...or gray helmet...anything but red with a red I state logo. My god. And it's a yellow color not gold.

And my opinion...the gold or yellow bball Unis are one of the ugliest Unis I've seen. But that's me.

I think they're solid as an alternate. I like that they say Cyclones instead of Iowa State.
I also like the all-yellow football jerseys as alternates.

People complain about K-State's traditional/never change unies, until they come to a place like this, or Ku, and visit all the consternation among fans who never get settled on anything. It's a shame ISU doesn't return to it's roots. The colors are awesome. But they never seem to fit in Ames like they do for the 49ers, Trojans and St. Louis Cardinals.

A cardinal helmet is easily the best helmet.

Still think these SF colors with some Trice stripes to make it unique to ISU would be hard to beat.
