Emmanuel Malou thread

Yeah, I gave followed him from the whole ABCD prep fiasco. He has to graduate JUCO. None of you have any idea what this move means. It could mean he is having issues with graduating, or it could just mean he wants to get back to Iowa earlier and be closer to the team. If he can finish up his studies here why not. Playing JUCO probably doesn't offer him much benefit anymore, and is just an added injury risk. How does moving to DMACC make it easier for him to graduate exactly? He could just as easily quit basketball and stay where he is at to focus on studies.

Maybe he just likes the Iowa winters better?

Well, being closer to the resources needed to know where the bar is set is always better. Being this close to Coach Prohm helps him academically and gives him a support system that has a much higher interest in seeing him graduate from CC. That isn't even taking into account being around the guys, which I'm sure he's ready for that switch after his conditions at Yuba. I am not saying it isn't a bit concerning but he is taking the necessary steps even if they seem a little out-of-the-ordinary and drastic, at least he's doing what is needed.

Sorry, but I don't see it being much of an academic move. The coaches and players aren't going to go over his homework with him, and he doesn't get access to any of the academic resources ISU athletes get (someone can correct me if I'm wrong in that). I would say going to a whole new academic environment and the complications of moving would more than offset any minor benefit to his studies he would get moving to DMACC.

It's a junior college, not Harvard. As long as he shows up to class more than half of the time, he'll get a C. He's probably moving closer, so he can hang out with the team and come to open gym stuff, outside of practice.

Why did Malou go to Yuba in the first place? I get that its in CA, but his team was completely terrible, close to last in CA CC basketball standings. Seemed like a natural fit for Indian Hills.

The benefit of going to DMACC is their connection to Iowa state. They can help him do what he needs to do to get in to ISU bc they know what it takes.

I think it's because California JUCOS were the only ones that would accept him in. He tried going to one of the better JUCOS in Idaho but wasn't cleared to play there.

I'm not saying they'll tutor him but ISU and DMACC have a very close relationship and they deal with transfer credits, etc, all the time. When I made the move from DMACC to ISU, I went to an ISU guidance counselor before my last semester at DMACC to make sure I was on the right path. There was actually a Spanish credit situation that they found where my DMACC Spanish credits didn't match up with what I needed at ISU. They signed me up for a course that would correct it and even facilitated the course through DMACC. I was saying that the transition from DMACC to ISU is smoother than Yuba to ISU. The staff knows this and it is only one of many reason I could think of why he might want to move closer.

What it takes is an Associates Degree
That and making sure credits transfer correctly. There are some finnicky credit hours you can take that can screw you up. I know from personal experience. With all of the troubles Malou has had academically, I think he made the right call with the DMACC move.

His time at ABCD prep probably really messed up his academic progress. California Jucos do not require a high school diploma but they can also not offer any kind of financial help.

DMACC students can live in ISU dorms now, correct? (I thought that this was something in motion or already in place) Correct me I have this wrong

That's correct. Son had a DMAAC roomie freshman year. Was planning on transferring and wanted to meet ISU people.

This is not good. If he cannot focus on studies and play basketball there, what makes anyone think he can do it in the future at ISU.
He absolutely has to graduate from community college because he went to ABCD prep which was a sham school. I think it has probably more to do with having to take more classes than normal athletes do during the year. Don't know, but that is my feeling.

Did some asking: Sounds like Malou to DMACC is a very good move for all. He can focus on academics there. Still plans to be a Cyclone.

Glad CW is giving us some informed perspective. Also glad that Malou will be closer to Iowa State where he can get some good support. Poor guy has been burned quite a few times in his young life. Hard to believe he has stayed positive. Can't wait to hear Fran and Brent tell the story on ESPN next year.

I think it was the Hines article that said he's basically living in an apartment with nothing but an air mattress, and apparently CA CC won't offer financial aid. Pretty easy to see the allure of DMACC just from the increase in quality of living. He should have a nicer place and qualify for some kind of assistance. Plus he gets the added bonus of being closer to Ames and the coaching staff, which I'm sure will have a vested interest in making sure he does what is needed academically.

If there really are academic concerns, it is what it is, and this move is actually the best case scenario to have him on the court for us next year.

My only question is would DMACC have accepted him straight out of ABCD? Because if they wouldn't have, I wonder if that is going to look a little shady to the NCAA when it comes to his eligibility at ISU. I know it shouldn't matter if he gets his Associates Degree, but still...

It doesn't really matter because as long as he is in good academic standing at his prior CC and meets DMACC's entrance requirements he is good to go.

I realize that...hence my final sentence. Don't get me wrong, I don't fault Malou in the least for the situation he's in and the route he's had to take. He's obviously been screwed by ABCD, which is a shame all around.

Just as long as he didn't play with Nerlens Noel too.
