More new coaches confirmed...

He's showing loyalty, these guys are just getting promoted with what I'm sure to be hefty raises.

I'm sure it's a lot more about self preservation at this point. Unless an inside hire takes over in Toledo and retains some of them, all of these guys will be looking for a job at season's end. It makes sense. Sometimes working with those you are familiar with can work, not always, but there is a record of success together there.

So we still need:

OC/QB coach
DC
Safety coach
DL coach

Hopefully not a big deal but it seems a little strange to have so few position coach openings left when hiring coordinators. I'd think typically coordinators would want a little say in their staff and possibly bring a person they're familiar with along.

What? That sounds like a terrible idea. Matt Campbell should hire coaches that fit what he is trying to do, not hire some coordinators and pitch the ball over the fence. He will hire an OC and DC that fit his mold, which will in turn fit the coordinators he has. He is the man in charge, and that is a welcome change.

That would be a great get!

Read his bio, he certainly has experience (especially defense) and is well liked. Only question might be that he was DC at Texas Tech....have they ever played defense there?? lol

Obviously Campbell should have the final say. Just saying it seems like the reverse of how most hirings I've observed work. I'm sure it will be fine but just seems to potentially limit the pool, especially somebody like an ex-head coach.

Well, here's the thing. You would have these offensive and defensive coordinators bring in their own philosophy and coaches. That seems terrible. Look at the good coaches. Saban for one. Do we expect Alabama to all of a sudden be terrible on D because Smart is leaving? No, Saban has final say in who he hires and hires coaches who share his vision and will work to keep their D at a high level. Did the OSU offense wither and die when Holgerson left? No, because it is really the Gundy philosophy, and he has hired a new OC that basically shares what he has envisioned for his team. Really, CPR's desperation led him to hire a coordinator like Mangino, and give him full control. It was a terrible moved, and showed that if CPR ahs a philosophy on Offense, he no longer believed in it. I want Campbell to get guys that fit what he wants to do. You don't want offensive and defensive divisions to develop because the coordinators are running them like mini-programs.

Im getting a little worried about the lack of Power-5 experienced coaches on this staff. I know they already all know each other and so on, but they need some people who can show them the ropes of the Big 12.

[h=4]Defensive improvementsEdit[/h]With McNeill at the defensive helm, the Red Raiders' defense improved in every defensive category.[SUP][6][/SUP] Under Setencich, Tech ranked seventh in pass defense, ninth in total defense, and tenth in scoring defense in Big 12 Conference play. In nine games with McNeill, Tech improved to first in pass and total defense and fourth in scoring defense.[SUP][11][/SUP] The Red Raiders forced more punts and allowed fewer rushing and passing yards than they did to begin the season.[SUP][12][/SUP] These vast improvements in the defense led Leach to drop the interim tag and make McNeill the full-time defensive coordinator.[SUP][12]

id take him.[/SUP]

Exactly. I am skeptical of anyone who has been a DC at Texas Tech, Indiana, Purdue ust to name a few.

The real question is could we pay him? Other than the black sheep Mangino, I cant remember a head coach who bumped back to an assistant for ISU. We aren't that type of program. He may end up with bigger pursuers(like another Big 12 program that think they need to improve, ala UT).

It's possible that he already knows who the coordinators are but can't announce them yet. In which case he's already run the assistants by them.

I would be shocked if we brought either of them on to be QB coach. It seems like Campbell only wants experienced recruiters.

Plus only have 1 offensive coach spot left so the OC will have to coach QBs. That closes the Sage Seneca possibility for now unless they agree to be GAs.

This is what I think most people are missing as well. We're sitting in that awkward time of year where the good teams are preparing for conference championships and bowl games, and we're not, again.
