5 year record

It depends. Do we look like we belong in the Big 12 or are we just beating the worst teams on the schedule and sneaking into bowl games? If we look competitive in losing then 30-30 is fine by me.

I hate using Iowa as a measuring stick, but that's basically where they've been under Kirk - unlike their fans I'd be perfectly happy with those results

This is exactly why CPR is still here. Because a majority of fans are ok with mediocrity. Which is not ok

There are various combinations, but it all starts with consistent competent play and maximizing the talent at hand. Maybe that is an oscillation near .500, but even downright bad seasons would be acceptable if sprinkled with some fantastic ones. PR has made high-level errors that destroy programs, and he is not great at the little things either.

There's no reason ISU cant be consistently around .500, and then occasionally have a 'special' year where we get up to 8 or 9 wins. Not expecting championships, but even most mediocre teams have had seasons like this.

How many times has ISU won 8+ games in a season? What's your definition of "occasionally"?

Right now I'd be fine with 26-36
That is:

  • 2 4-8 seasons
  • 1 5-7 season
  • 1 6-7 season
  • 1 7-6 season

Now if someone does that obviously it needs to increase. People need to have reasonable goals. Now obviously my ultimate goal is to go 14-0 and win the title, but that isn't reasonable now. There were people here who thought that even if we would go 6-6 and make a bowl game that would be an unsuccessful season.

My realistic long term goal of where I think we can get to is to be 33-31
That is:
  • 1 5-7 season
  • 1 6-7 season
  • 1 7-6 season with a bowl win
  • 1 7-6 season with a bowl loss
  • 1 8-5 season with a bowl win

How many times has ISU held on to a coach for far longer than we probably should have, especially if we had a higher expectation? Walden, Mccarney, now Rhoads. Thats part of the problem. We set the bar too low and then wait way too long to pull the trigger on waiting to see if thats actually working. This just leaves it that much harder for the next coach.

We also have had multiple 7 or 8 win seasons if you go back to the 70s (skipping the time where we completely ignored our football program altogether) and also in the early 2000s when the season was 12 games instead of 13 (with a bowl)

Being satisfied with 6-6 is exactly what got us stuck with what's his face for 7 years.

No, not really.

JP thought he had a coach that added value- took a 2-10 team to .500 ball- with the thought once he builds the base to 6-6, you will get an occasional 8 or 9 win team.

That's a really nice way of saying we are satisfied with 6-6.

.500 or just a bit better isn't unreasonable anywhere, including ISU.

And if it were just below .500 or something, I'd at least like to not sit there and wonder how Toledo looks more fundamentally sound and athletic than a 'Power 5 team'.

There were some revisits to classic ISU fodder last night, but that was the most glaring thing about it.

If Rhoads had gone 7-6 in 2013 and 5-7 last year (or thereabouts), there wouldn't really be a question about him being the coach in 2016. Your post doesn't make much sense.

I'm sure it is quite confusing to those satisfied with mediocrity.

To have a 5 year win total far exceeding any years national champion win total

My expectation is to be Kansas State 2.0. There is no reason if Snyder could turn a turd in Manhattan into a decently successful program that the same can't be done in Ames. No reason whatsoever. Will it be easy? No.

Exactly how many Bill Snyders are there out there in college football? Lol, your only setting your expectations on probably the greatest turn around ever in college football. I think your confusing possibility with probability.
