The use of it is free. That is what they estimate each person will spend do in town each time they come to use it.

Gonna need a casino and hotel complex just to accommodate the influx of visitors from all over the nation!

:skeptical:

Now Cedar Falls wants one so they can cannibalized the small group that Chuck City, Elkader and Manchester are fighting over.

So I have a problem I want you young hip people to tell me if I am handling it ok.

For the first time in nearly two decades, a couple asked me to sing at their wedding. I wouldn't mind doing it except I am kind of awful now that I am getting old and losing my upper register. Used to be able to at least eek out an E without having to go falsetto, now it is dicey anything over a C sharp.

So I told them I stink and maybe they should get someone else and they said four people have already turned them down because they are gay. I don't care about that, I just don't want to humiliate myself in public. I suggested that one of my boys is a good musician and could do it and play guitar, but one bride said that would be embarrassing for her because she had a crush on him in high school, asked him out a few times, and asked him to prom. (No he didn't "turn" her gay, she had a long-term boyfriend after him.) I suggested since both brides are great vocalists that they each do it and just have instrumental music for parts, and they said they will sing, but want songs sung at the beginning and end.

So finally, I told them to give me the music and a few days to prepare, and then listen to me try to sing it, since they seemed to be so insistent. They went for that. They also said if it was too high for me they would just change the key. I think I will still stink and they will be horrified, but not planning on tanking it on purpose. So was that an ok thing to tell them? I don't want them to think it is because they are gay. I also think they should be looking for someone else though. Wedding is in October so coming up fast.

I get the frustration with it, but part of all these lately, I think (and Box, correct me if I'm wrong, you seem to be more of an expert here than I am), is that there's a lot of pressure for communities to get rid of low head dams because they're really useless now...but they are a safety problem. So, the thought is that some of the money will be spent anyway, to get rid of it...so you spend a little to get nothing (other than getting rid of a safety issue), or you spend some more to get 'an attraction'.

Now, that's not to say that I agree with their economic impact numbers, but the politics of it is do we spend $5 to fix the problem and nothing else, or do we spend $10 (or 20, or 50, I don't know the scope of them) to actually get something in return that they can puff their chest out about 'bringing to the community'.

And I'm not arguing Box's point...that whole thing is a mess, but I wanted to clarify that it's not just that communities are saying "hey, let's have whitewater", they're mixing it in while fixing a safety problem.

I'd be more offended that I was their fifth option.

CG will probably sing for them. She's got a pretty singing voice.

Sounds reasonable, and I would suggest changing the key very strongly if that is what you are more comfortable with.

:wacko:Hard to be offended when I even think I am a crappy option.

Yea, I think you are right. They emailed me the music and both songs have E's and one has F's. Peeps would be like, give that old lady CPR, she's dying. I am going to start asking around, I know there have to be better options than me, and just scout out if they would mind doing it. I did sing at the parents' wedding of one bride, but I don't think they are looking at me for sentimental reasons, just desperate.

Carver tell them to contact the ISU music department. There are plenty of students who would do a wonderful job for cheap and also not care about sexual tendencies (if not share them as well).

this was going to be my suggestion as well. The requests for me came in through my voice teacher (well not for "me" specifically, but someone who would sing for cheap). Carver, I forget exactly where you are, but if it's the DSM area, I know Ankeny had a pretty great music program (I'm sure they all do, really).......if ISU students are too much/too far, get a high school kid.

seven people have been bitten by sharks on the Carolina coast the past few weeks. Who is still going in that water? I mean, I get it, hippos are more dangerous or something like that, but after 3, 4, and 5, I'd be like this ain't no coininky-dink, Jaws has developed a taste for those little man meat bites.

Wonder what the weather has been like? I know every time I've been to North Carolina the water has been really murky. That certainly doesn't help.

I'll be the wedding singer.

I will keep you in mind if my new plan doesn't fly.

This is also a great idea.

I'm in the boonies of southern Iowa. Youngest son gave me a plan though. The middle school band director is new since these girls went to school and sings beautifully at our church. He thinks he can charm her into it. Only hitch might be she's Catholic, but so am I and I am much older and would be willing to do it if I didn't suck. The brides are some Missouri version of Lutheran that won't marry them apparently so wedding is at a private club.

There's a youth group thing at church that she helps with, so if son can talk her into it, I will just take her along with me so they can hear how much better she is. Fingers crossed. Might see if ISU can give me a recommendation for someone in this part of the state if it doesn't work.

Thanks everyone for your help.
