I just don't get this line of thinking. TJ is not a hot commodity. We can do better than someone that wasn't going to get hired by Green Bay. If Fred leaves and we promote TJ that is a dark day.
I still think Fred comes back next year and TJ is the HC coach in waiting. But the fact CFH has not put NBA rumors to rest this spring, tells me he has a list of NBA jobs he would jump at tomorrow.
If I were ISU's athletic director the top two guys on my list would be Archie Miller of Dayton and Chris Mack of Xaiver. Both have won at a high level for an extended period. Hornacek would be an interesting candidate- Cyclone great, Chicago ties and NBA coaching experience that would be attractive to recruits.

Never said there wouldn't be the risk of getting a dud...just wanted to point out that it would be foolish to think that Fred is the only coach that could possibly win at a high level here.

Well we've only had one example of a coach that can win at a high level and who can do it consistently. That's Hoiberg.
Larry wasn't consistent. Tim wasn't consistent. The other two sure as heck weren't.
So yes, I think it is fair to say that it is VERY unlikely that we find another coach as consistent and as good as Hoiberg.
And you can't say we don't have a lot of data to prove this point--we are on our 5th coach in 20 years and it sounds like we will be signing up #6 soon.
Honestly at this point, I don't even care. Things are a lot worse than missing on some players at this point.
Look, I'm not in favor of him getting the job. But honestly he might be the only option.
I doubt there is going to be a long line of people ready to take medicre money to follow not only an excellent coach but also a beloved figure at Iowa State. Especially in late May/June/July (whenever the stupid Bulls trade their stupid coach).
Other coaches aren't going to want to screw over the school they are at either.
You're right. I just feel at this point, the best level of success we can hope for is Iowa. And frankly that will feel like a disaster.
Floyd had one bad year and 3 years of winning in the NCAA Tournament. You wouldn't say that is consistant? Larry was hit or miss but brought us the two best years in the history of the program. (27-5 in Big 12 play with 2 conference titles, an elite 8 appearance, and 2 wins at the phog).
I realize Fred has an amazing resume and it will be tough to replace him, but you have said repeatedly that the best we can hope for is mediocre boring basketball at an Iowa level if Fred leaves, and been matter of fact about it...that's just dumb. There IS a chance that would be the case, but quit acting like you know it. We've won big without Fred before, and there is a shot the next guy in would do it too.
Absolutely, Fred's not the the only one that can win at a high level, hell I'm sure there's a handful of coaches out there that can do better than Fred. However, I'm not sure Iowa St can get one of them. Either they're already at a better program, it's a bad time of year to be searching for a new coach, the AD doesnt want to pay for one, or the AD just can't identify good coaches.
I would love to see them go for a successful proven coach, but I just don't think they would. If the settle for TJ, we just gotta hope he can be that successful coach. At least with TJ, there's a chance he can be good, we don't know because he's never had the opportunity. Of course there's also the flip side chance that's he's in over his head and is a complete flop.
Floyd was basically at an Iowa level while he was here. One 5 seed in the NCAA. I think a 7 and maybe a 10. Hoiberg had already bested in him results and consistency.
Of course there is a shot, but it is a very slim shot. And I won't act like we aren't losing the best shot we've EVER had at becoming a national program. We are so ******* close. And that all goes down the drain.
Getting to the NCAA tournament maybe 40% of the time is the level that I think Iowa is at now. That's the level (at best) that every other coach at Iowa State has done.
To be clear, when I say Iowa level...I mean what I think Mad Fran will manage at Iowa.

Fred has built the Cyclone hoops program into a very attractive job. We won't be settling on our next head coaching hire. If TJ is the next coach, JP must feel he has a very bright future.
If JP hires a HC from another school, I would surprised if we don't pay the new guy in the $2M range- there is too much money at risk to drop back to a GMAC level program.

Your memory is terrible. Iowa has 1 NCAA tournament win in the last 15 years. Tim won 4 in 4 years. He also got us up as high as #4 in the top 25, finished 2nd in the Big 8 to one of the best KU teams in the last 30 years, and was a Cameron Dollar shove-off away from the Elite 8...an Iowa level?...you are truly delusional.
