Growing up in a small town (1500 people), here's my take.

I was never a clique guy and I also wasn't overly outgoing early on either. I just floated around and was friends with basically everyone. As a result, I loved growing up for the first 14 years of my life in a small town, but those high school years sucked.

Iowa State came at the right point in my life. I had so many more options for friends, dating, stuff to do, etc.

I miss the overall friendliness that small towns offer, along with the freedom to let your kids have a longer leash. However, having everyones issues being public record is something I detest. When I go back to my hometown and run into my parents' friends, I'm amazed how much people know about me.

A few weeks ago, one lady came up to me and started talking to me about our trip to Disney World that we're planning at the end of the year. I get weird about some of that stuff anymore. If I bring it up it's one thing, but some of that borders on creepy to me.

Yeah but you argued it with other people too. You don't like to admit you're wrong.

With all due respect, I have to disagree BikesFan. Poll the whole country on if. Marshalltown is a small town or not and I'd be willing to bet well over 90% will say it is. Just because those that grew up in smaller towns don't look at it as a small town doesn't change the fact that it is a small town.

I was born in a small town, and I can breathe in a small town. I married an LA doll and brought her to this small town, now she's small town, just like me.

If you are from a town with fewer people, Marshalltown is not a small town. It just depends on your perspective.

If you poll the US, Marshalltown is definitely a small town. Hell, Des Moines is a small town.

Honestly, if you poll the US, most people probably couldn't find Des moines on a map....possibly Iowa either.

One thing I think everyone needs to understand is the other person's perspective, something I still struggle with myself when it comes to things like this.

Please excuse me if I'm wrong, mtown, but I think you grew up around the Twin Cities, whereas I grew up in the Chicago area. (You wanna talk high school class size? I'm pretty sure I have you all beat) From mtown and my experiences, which shaped our perspective, yes, Marshalltown (and Ottumwa) are small towns. Shoot, I moved to Omaha after getting married, and remember being gobsmacked that the local news reported all of the high school football scores.

Now, I will slightly chide mtown for not thinking about his audience. Most of the people on this board are either currently living in Iowa, or have formerly lived in Iowa. In comparison to all the towns in Iowa and their population, yeah, Marshalltown and Ottumwa aren't really "small".

Does Pants live on a big or small island? I mean it's Oahu, bigger than some but smaller than Hawaii, aka, Big Island. Talkin' ocean islands here, not islands in a river or lake and we can discount islands that are continents.

Oahu is no Cuba or even Falklands so I am going with "small", with a caveat that it's a small island with a big city.

I grew up in the city. Not only was it densely populated but it was a neighborhood where people walked around and came in from the suburbs so experience the city. So there were a lot of people and a lot of new people all the time. My HS was private (about 1,350 students) so we were considered small in the city.

You live in Ottumwa now?

If you want to get technical we all live on an island. :twitcy:

Group hug!!!

(Ok, really just Sara, CG, Birdy, Rev, and oh, heck, I suppose KC, too...you guys can do what you want)

Only hugging the gals?

Not that I come from a hugging family. It's that damn SMALL TOWN IOWA German background where even a pat on the shoulder was too much physical contact!

Are we talking size or population? Or territory. I believe if you include the Square footage of the entire Hawaii state borders (is not necessarily all landmass) it's the biggest state in the US.

It's sad that the wife and I had a discussion this weekend about having to drop one of my daughter's activities (soccer versus gymnastics) because they were getting too time consuming. I applaud couples that have multiple kids in multiple activities with both people working. I have no idea how they do it and still get anything else done around their house.
