Walking Dead

Anyone into the comic books? What does the comic book say about 'Alexandria?' What happens to that place in the book? The Series does seem to mimic the book to an extent.
I am thinking the group may get banished from the place, either by failed attempt to take it, or that kid tells on Carroll. Rick may turn into a bad dude and leads the group that way by the end of the season....only 3 more episodes left until October!

EDIT:
Google "walking dead Alexandria" and look for the walking dead wiki page for Alexandria (Comic Series)

Whoever responds to this, please just send a PM directly to mcdrier. Don't post any spoilers here!

From what I can tell, these people have had no real run ins with bad people. It will be interesting what plot lines they run that differ from the comics. I am betting the next big plot line wont even really start till the finale or next season. I am betting the rest of the season will be them adjusting to their new roles and maybe dealing with the few people the town banished a while back. It will be interesting to find out what the W stands for.

They have to have some big battle/rebellion this year in the finale. Just can't be adjusting to new roles without a major conflict coming soon.

Still guessing that the same group that trashed Noah's community in Richmond, where the word "wolves" was spray painted on a wall will show up to attack Alexandria. Probably ties in with the three guys Deanna kicked out. From the previews, looks like a walker horde shows up. Wonder if they all have "W" and somehow this outside group has a way to use walkers as first wave of attack.

But there has to be some internal conflict as well, and I admit there are a ton of moving parts here that will be difficult to tie up into a nice bow in three episodes. I am so curious...

- Rick and doctor's wife. wtf?
- Supports on outside. worst.architect.ever
- Gabriel
- Who took the gun?
- What is girl doing when she sneaks off?
- What up with Sasha?

Going to be three good episodes, I think.

I found this in reddit from an "Ask an Enginner" page:

"As the hordes of undead press up against the wall, overturning will be resisted by tension forces in the support braces. From a steel design point of view, those support braces are stronger in tension than compression, due to buckling failure modes. So this is a good choice. However, the foundation would be more tricky. I would recommend a combined footing for both the braces and the fence, so that the weight of zombies and concrete resists the tension force from the brace, and it becomes a self-reacting structure.
There's also the concern of zombies climbing the braces, though they seem pretty brainless in The Walking Dead."

I don't know that the "enginner" is considering current building conditions at the site with that answer.

Unless they had the ability to create an extensive footing for each brace (doubtful to me), I would think the failure would occur from the braces pulling from the soil, as opposed to tensile failure of the braces themselves. Depending on the depth they are buried, the brace/soil friction would almost assuredly be less than the compression of the braces, so the limiting factor will probably be pulling a brace out, vs pushing it into the ground (if it was on the other side of the wall with little to no footing). Depending on soil type and depth of the current braces, the best "doable" design for them would likely be braces on the other side with a small footing (perhaps a piece of the metal wall if they had extras, or the hood from one of the many abandoned cars you find in the area) buried just underneath.

Yeah, I'm not sure how an accurate assesment can be done without seeing how those supports are on there. They have not shown a good shot of the base of those beams.

So I just got back from vacation and watched the latest episode. I'm glad they found a little bit of normalcy, if only for a moment. Being on the road was growing a little tiresome. Two things that stuck out to me from the episode...

-Daryl is gay and that will mind-**** many people out there.

-The street that Rick walks past towards the end of the show is "Morgan St"

Actually, pretty on par for architects. Generally speaking, architects don't do load analyses. They design things to be aesthetically pleasing. A structural engineer does the load analysis. And I would agree with nhclone; the most likely failure would be the steel pulling out of the ground, not failing. It makes much more sense to have the supports on the inside, as most soil conditions are far better in compression. All it would take is any piece of steel/concrete/any other metal in a pinch to distribute the load from the end of the steel to a larger area of soil.

In the end, the supports are going to be what does in those walls. Nefarious human intervention will do them in one way or another.

It's pretty clear that the biggest threat to this community is other people rather than walkers.

I wont spoil anything, but as slow as they are moving with the intro to alexandria, there is no way the bolded part happens unless its right at the end of the season. Still a lot of drama to come with huge amounts of drama beyond that. Just don't get disappointed that there isn't likely a governor type drama this season. Next season however, get your batting practice in :biglaugh:
Then again, the way this show moves, could be a completely different scenerio. THey changed the governor arc so much, it was barely recognizable.

I just want to say how hurt I am to not be on your list.

I am also hurt by my exclusion.

It's like 3rd grade and not being invited to the cool kid's birthday party.

Believe it or not, the signature line has a limit of 4 lines and 500 characters! Just found that out, as I had trouble over the weekend trying to add new posters. At this point, best chance is for somebody to drop out. There are a few skating on thin ice!
:jimlad:

Edit: apparently, I'm at 427? I might have to try this again.
