Pop Songs about Iowa/Iowa Towns

Something else that popped up in my Google searches, Jonesin’, an Iowa band that opened for U2 at a local bar in Ames, just before they hit it big, inducted just this year into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (members were originally from Newton, they also played places like Clarinda, Shenandoah, and Council Bluffs):

I’m not from there, but here is a March 24, 1969 article from the Harlan, Iowa, newspaper (apparently by a high school student), about the Music Box and the radio station that was sponsoring a lot of shows there then (lower left):

"Filmore in Ames Iowa", what was that?

It was a big newer club then kind of off by itself on the southeast side of town. After that it became the Mississippi Queen, or MQ. I was there the last night it was the MQ, which was anarchy as the night went on.

They often had live music and could seat a lot of people. On a regular week night though there might be almost no one else there.

I don't know what happened after that, what became of it, but the gradual rise in in the drinking age from 18 to 21 took a toll.

That brought back some memories. I heard some decent bands in that place.

Fillmore, then MQ, became a country bar in the early 80s, then at some point the owner of Hickory Park bought it as a reception hall. It still pretty much has the same layout, probably one of the better places in Ames to host a large reception or party, but I'd still rather see it be a 600 seat concert hall.

Not in a positive light - grouped with Oregon as "not for me". About 1:09 into this Yardbirds B-side. Easy to find based on the graphics graciously provided. Well, not so graciously if you pause it and see what was added to the Welcome to Iowa sign.

If you are from the Fort Dodge area, you might remember a song from the 90's called "Kokotho", which was a parody of the Beach Boys song "Kokomo". It names many towns in the Ft. Dodge, to Spencer, to Algona triangle. It was made by some locals and it ran on 94.5 radio out of Ft. Dodge. Actually a pretty good song.

:spinny:

I remember hearing that song all the time in the early or mid 90s. Good tune for sure!! Been looking for a link of it online, but no luck.

Also, Wesley Willis "Hell Greyhound Bus Ride" is about his bus trip from Chicago to Ft. Dodge.

C. W. McCall's classic was the Old Home Filler Up and Keep on Truckin' Cafe.... direct mention of Pisgah, Beebeetown, and Mondamin... and his faithful dog was named Sloan (my home town).

My buddy and I put this together last weekend. He's obviously a professional video/photographer (ISU Grad). Based on a 45 RPM record I owned. We did it just for something fun to do...

Greg Brown has a song called Fairfield that's pretty funny. Unfortunately I can't find any video of him singing it but I did find this cover.

That's a good one! He also mentions Eldon, Ottumwa, Mt. Pleasant and Burlington in the song. The drummer is wearing a Case iH t-shirt so he must be in the red zone. The sax player does a heck of a job. What's a "floater"?

Good job, Dean! I really enjoyed that!

It is good. So good I listened to it over and over. There is nothing else like this song - a hoot.
