MLB: 2014 Chicago Cubs

Fujikawa coming up for Schierholtz.

Baez up for good.

Cubs worked out Rusney Castillo, a gold-glove potential outfielder who's bat reminds many of Kenny Lofton who will be playing right away with whatever team he goes to

Cubs claimed Jacob Turner off waivers - a projected ace with Verlander/Scherzer qualities 2 years ago but fallen apart in the Rays system.

That's an interesting day right there.

Castillo has 28 teams looking at him.

He really would be a great get. He and Soler would be starting out there for us next year for sure. I'm assuming Alcantara would either move to right or become our utility man. I'd say utility man is most likely since Bryant/Russell/Castro will be taking over right once the big 4 are all up.

The bat speed is to die for, yes. But his approach at the plate still needs work...a lot of it. It's one of the top weaknesses that scouts talk about in his game. He puts himself into bad hitter's counts all the time, which is a big reason for his K-rate. And I've seen him swing himself out of his shoes on pitches above his eyes more than once in person.

I think he'll turn out to be a good player before it's all said and done, but he's got more than a little wood to chop right now.

Last night was the first time I've seen him swing the bat. His first swing, I'm sitting there by myself, and I say aloud..."Sheffield".

As in he's the Cubs' or the Cubs and Marlins need to work out a trade for him now?

Same thought has crossed my mind. Does the kid have some work to do, yes. But keep in mind this kid was the youngest player in AAA, he has some time to develop. He has already been improving as the season has went along, so let's let him take his hacks and work on his deficiencies this offseason...which worked well with Rizzo a few years back.

I'm not the oldest Cubs fan, but I've been a fan since the days of Jody Davis. I can't recall a time I've been this optimistic regarding the future as a fan. The front office isn't perfect, but their hits have far surpassed their misses. This team has the potential to be something special.

Regarding Turner, I'm reading some posts that are stating that this guy is done. Keep in mind that Arrieta was considered a blown prospect two seasons ago. Not saying that Turner will turn that corner, but I'm hoping there is a good shot at it and I feel the Cubs are the perfect team for him.

Let the losses slide this year. We will get another great pick and this team will start to turn the corner. The stars are aligning.

Still have to work out a deal. But if they don't the Rockies can pick him up for free...so I would imagine a deal will get done. Crazy that the lowly Rockies could have had him for nothing and didn't put a claim in. Expect a dead weight vet or a bat that is behind a log jam to get moved. I'd love to move Edwin Jackson for him!

Yeah, I'd have no problem moving Lake or Ruggiano for him, or better yet Jackson even if the Cubs have to pay half his salary.

What makes me giddy is look at what the Cubs have done with the pitchers that are "broken"

Arrieta, Travis Wood kind of, Strop.

We can take pitchers who have fallen on hard times and work with them to make them back to what they can be.

They could give all 3 for Turner, and Im not sure I would care.

Agreed. Though I don't really want to lose Dunston, just because of his ties. His projections say he won't be in the league, but he's gotten a lot faster the last 2 years and his defense has gotten a lot better as well. He has an average bat. I think he could be a good platooner.

Honestly, that comparison might not be far off when it's all said and done.

What kind of major leaguer was the ellder shawn duston. I think he was a little before my time.

Talented and streaky. Had a cannon of an arm at shortstop, but no one really knew where the ball was going. He had good first basemen, and that really helped him out a lot.

He never quite measured up to all the hype, but the hype was pretty insane.

All correct. Mark Grace saved Dunston so many errors, but it was fun to watch Dunston throw. He wanted to put a hole in the 1st baseman's hand.

Streaky is very appropriate. Remember the "Shawn-o-meter"? It's what all other "o-meters" are based on. Classic.

Only thing is, Baez will need to figure out how he's going to hit .330. He has the Sheffield swing, but will he ever control it like Sheffield did? If so, kid is going to be a monster.
