There's no formula. You can't get accurate advice on generalities, it depends on the details. For instance, in that scenario, let's assume you're talking about a job opportunity that would move you away from a relationship...well, in one instance with a new relationship and an awesome job opportunity, you might go with your 'head', but with a long term relationship and an exciting, but risky/shaky job offer, you maybe should go with 'heart'.
