Quarterback Situation

Consistently? Never. I don't see any reason that's going to change anytime soon. I'm not sure what you're getting at. My only point was people keep using stats from games against easy opponents to make their arguments. I don't think that's a good measurement. There's a lot of D1 QBs who will have solid games if they are playing against terrible defenses.

If you look at the success of teams in ISU football since the '90's you will see that ISU can attribute the success they did have to relatively easy schedules. Even look at some of your elite programs. Look at how the SEC protects their top teams from beating up on each other too much, allowing them to play an easier schedule.

To be honest, we need to win the games we are supposed to and then win some of the games that are tossups. Throw in a few upsets and we are in for a pretty good season for ISU. Contend for the National Championship or even Conference Championship? Doubt it. The moon and stars would have to line up for that to happen as well as a severe cold snap in Hell.

I agree. Considering 8 or more wins has only happened once in Ames since the 70's I think these are realistic expectations. It would take a minor miracle to accomplish anything more than that with Cyclone football. There's just too many things stacked against them. The program history, tough recruiting location, and the fact the Cyclones are in a pretty difficult conference all make it damn near impossible to compete for a B12 Championship and definitely the new 4 team playoff.

The new stadium and the fan base will help Cyclone football stay alive. That is what's neat about ISU football. Fans get stoked about any bowl game, and usually travel very well. That has to be a cool feeling for the players even if it only means they won 6 games.

Agree with you there.

IMO, we need to hopefully get bowl eligible every year if possible. And occasionally hope to get much better records when things break ISU's way.

TCU and also WVU have learned the hard way as to just how difficult life is in the Big 12 where you must play EVERY team and only get 3 non-conference games. Both BCS teams a short while ago when life was easier.

If you think Sam can't perform against a pass rush, in the pocket with the pressure on you might want to look up the longest TD pass in ISU history real quick.

DuckDynasty is right. We haven't had a good line in a long time. Even Troy Davis had a good line, only reason Troy's team wasn't good was because our defense was SO bad. I mean bad guys.... BAD. Plus Doxen and was our QB.....

I think most people are probably right that if any of these guys gets good line play then we will have an average to good QB. Until this O-line can man up and start kicking people's @ss's we aren't ever going to win. O-line most important position group on the field. D-line second most important. You don't have either, time to pack it up. All the talent in the world, couldn't win without good line play.

As far as our lines go, I'm looking forward to this year's o-line. They have a ton of playing time racked up, a year in the weight room, and a years beating against better athletes to realize what it takes to be good.

D-line.... I'm scared. Hold me.

Our historically successful teams during the Earl Bruce years were distinguished by kicka$$ lines.

I remember more average than good. With no hole TD would get 2 yds, small one 4-8, and when if he was getting big holes you could feel that he was about to break one all the way.

No doubt Troy could squeeze through any hole, but that line was pretty good. He hds some Mack truck sized holes on several occasions in each game. You don't run for 2000 yds without a good o-line.

Troy would rush for at least 1,500 plus now even with limited touches. The guy literally broke 2 or 3 tackles every carry.

I know I was lucky enough to have season tickets for both his years. Greatest thing I'd ever seen in person as far as athletics goes. Seemed like he had two or three 60 yard runs every game. I still think you over estimate him though. If he was that good he would have made it in the pros.

Agreed. Although I believe he either held or still holds the record for the lowest score ever on the Wonderlic test. That may have more to do with his short NFL career than his athletic ability. There's plenty of dumb players in the NFL, but to set the low score record takes it to another level.

With that said, there's far too much guaranteeing around here. Guaranteeing ISU would have multiple 8 or 9 win seasons if they were still in the B12 North. Guaranteeing TD would have a minimum 1500 yards if he were to play right now. Man if only our thoughts could become reality huh.

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.

There's some words of wisdom for ya this morning. We can convince ourselves to believe anything in order to make us happy. Unfortunately that doesn't make it reality.

Sounds like it was Darren Davis that scored a 4 on the Wonderlic Test. Not Troy. Although it was rumored Troy did not score well either. Interesting to note that Frank Gore, an All Pro, scored a 6. And Morris Claiborne scored a 4 which ties for the worst score ever.

Troy was an extremely nice person. Still have his and Darren's auto graphs. One on a replica jersey, other on a crude bird in the blender drawing I did when I was 8.

We lost 5 games by 7 or less. We got some experience on offense now and a huge upgrade at OC. This team could easily be back in a bowl game.

I'm definitely not worried about the offense. That is unless you want to call out the O-line, but I don't see another year like we had before. The defense needs to grow up, and grow fast.

It's about time there's some positive outlook. Everyone seems to think the wheels are falling off. The biggest challenges/struggles this year will be on the defensive side of the ball.

Here's some positivism.

The best thing Rhoads has done since coming to ISU was hiring Mangino. Here's why. We have three head coaching quality coaches now. Rhoads, Mangino, and Burnham. That's not even counting the fact that we have CM and WB son's coaching, think that will help our cohesion?

Rhoads is a great special teams coach, and now that he has Mangino he can focus on defense again. The fact that Rhoads will be coaching more specialized now is probably our biggest asset. Rhoads is an amazing position coach. Just look at our special teams. They are AWESOME. Who fakes punts and goes 100% conversion on them? Paul Rhoads. Who makes the best punter I've ever seen? Paul Rhoads. Apply this to the defense now, and it only spells good things.

Mangino and Burnham's resumes speak for themselves. I think that Rhoads really thought hard about these changes this off season, and with good reason. As much of a wreck this last season was, all the decisions made by CPR were 100% fantastic. I'm excited to watch the defense, just because I know they are going to be screaming all over the place. Burnham is gonna have to let these young pups loose, and swarm, swarm, swarm. They can learn the techniques better as the year goes on, but right now they need to be bad @sses first and foremost.
