The most heavy-handed charge I could see if things did turn out for the worst would be negligent manslaughter or something.

no. Attempted murder requires intent. It would be very hard to argue that knocking down the light pole was done with the intent of killing someone.
The people standing around watching and cheering are just as much to blame.
Unless maybe it was the most brilliant attempted murder ever, nobody could suspect it was intentional. The perfect crime.
I would have guessed yes, but two years ago they canceled the Mifflin Block Party here in Madison after a crazy 2012 in which a couple people were stabbed. The whole point of the Block Party was well, to party - nothing like VEISHEA with week-long on-campus events. I was sure they'd end up having a big party last year since it wasn't university-affiliated to start with, but they just ended up with a very minor get together (party is too strong of a word for it!). They issued 7 citations compared with 545 the year before.
I don't think attempted manslaughter is even a charge is it?
If its attempted manslaughter, then its basically murder.
I think what you're looking for is "involuntary manslaughter".

I'm guessing that the idiots who were out last night were not capable of coming up with the perfect burrito, let alone the perfect crime.
In terms of the single event? Last night's riot was tame in comparison to 2004's. It probably compares with the celebration riot after the Sweet Sixteen win.
There was no tear gas, nothing was set on fire, the property damage was minimal (in 2004, they destroyed store fronts), and it remained contained.
That is, except for one thing: this is the first riot where someone has been seriously injured as a result of the rioting. We had the drunk kid fall off the balcony one year, and the idiot from Ft. Dodge who stabbed the other idiot from Ft. Dodge over cheating on their drugs or owing money for girlfriends or something, but this is an actual life-flighted kid that we still don't know the condition of (which is a bad sign) injured in the actual riot. But an injury like this was inevitable. We are honestly lucky it hasn't happened before tonight.
In terms of the whole weekend? This is bad. The fact that we had car flipping and sign-destruction on a tuesday, let alone random fires being lit (someone tried to burn down Jimmy Johns with a stolen toaster btw). There is nowhere for this week to go but to escalate. Years past, the real rioting has happened on Saturday, so everyone was dispersing the next day anyway.
These kids, the students, were expecting a week of partying. Taking it away from them is just going to make them angry, and you're not going to be able to keep them from getting alcohol. They'll get angry, frustrated, and drunk, and that's a recipe for violent and stupid.
The out of towners don't give a crap what ISU does. They're in town to drink and get laid, and they're going to drink and get laid. They'll either instigate, or at the very least, encourage the angry students to keep getting angrier, more frustrated, and worst of all, more drunk. They'll be the mayo on the violent and stupid sandwich.
And worst of all, the out of towners who aren't here yet. Ames swells thursday-friday-saturday and no matter what the police or university says, those people are still coming, and they're expecting drinking and partying.
The prevailing feeling from the people I'm talking to is: last night wasn't as bad as previous riots, but last night isn't the end of this year's problems.
Who needs a perfect burrito on a Tuesday night in Ames? $.95 tacos at Es Tas... This is where these kids should have been.
doesn't need to be intentional. Committing a felony, even a non-violent one, that results in someone's death, is murder. This is why hitting someone while driving drunk is murder, not manslaughter.

1. Maybe the cops should stop breaking up house parties and pushing the party goers to Welch. You think they would have learned from the last riot. Sometime you have to pick your poison and wiegh house party vs. riot.
2. I find it funny when people say "I am so embarrassed by this". Seriously? I am a proud ISU grad and alum that still lives in Ames, but I don't feel this affects my life to the extent of being embarrassed by it.
3. Cancelling VEISHEA will do nothing. 1) The students will riot because of VEISHEA being cancelled and 2) the future years students know when VEISHEA should be and will still consider it an unofficial party weekend.
