Recruit Lists v2.0

What is an example of negative recruiting hurting us? I don't think there is one in the '14 class that could be viewed as a bigger deal than the amount of time and commitment we spent on a prospect.

I'm fine with us choosing to eliminate inferior options. Like 3 star recruits we don't think can play. No signing high school kids who can't contribute just because that is the norm for schools when they miss on their top targets, or can't do any better. I'm excited our staff is progressive and has a plan that takes advantage of what other schools ignore.

And it has been extremely successful.

And like I have said, our last 3 recruits from high school were 4 stars. The year before that we signed Naz Long, George Niang (another 4 star), and Okoro.

That's a pretty damn solid percentage there. And there is a very slight chance that Okoro could've contributed if he stayed past his freshman year. But even if you count him as a complete bust that is a phenomenal percentage.
Tavon Sledge? Jordan Railey?

You are ignoring the fact that the negativity is working. Argue all you want but it is working.

Where is your evidence this is working? The reason they aren't coming could be because they think Ames is lame, or because of the cold weather, or because we don't pay them (Vaughn).

We're being negative recruited against very hard and effectively.

Fran advertizes the Four Year Plan with 10 minutes a game playing time for depth. Fred goes with the win as much as possible.

Look, the talent level of the starting is so good, high school freshman will have to have a lot of confidence to join our team. That is just the way it is.

I'm not sure that's worse than what it used to be when we sucked for the better part of the last decade.

1. Fred stays long enough and eventually this pitch will be harder to sell

2. I don't think kids with the level of talent Fred has been targeting lately will be too worried by this.

I also think Fred can easily refute both of those points.

1. If Fred tells you he'll be there, you believe him.

2. All the four stars that came played significant minutes as freshmen.

I can't believe how many posters are jumping to the conclusion that the reason many of our HS recruits have committed elsewhere is due to negative recruiting. Could it be that they were recruited by bigger programs, saw more playing time available, liked other coaching staffs, etc.? There's no doubt Fred's situation is being used against him, but I think you guys are dramatizing it a little.

As long as the HS recruits that we DO get are top 100 and we keep filling the roster with high quality JUCOs and transfers, I see no reason to worry. Hoiberg's strategy seems to be working and the rest of college basketball is following. If you aren't Kentucky or Kansas, there is no reason to try to go after every one of the top 20 guys.

I hope we continue to target guys in the 40-100 range. That is probably the sweet spot for us. As Vaughn proved, top 10 guys aren't going to come to Ames at this point. Plus frankly, their production can be made up with transfers anyway.

I would like to see us average at least 2 quality 4-yr guys like Morris, Niang, Thomas, etc each year. That is your cornerstone and then you can plug roster holes and over-rerecruit misses with Jucos and transfers.

I know for a fact the coaches felt very strongly about the 2014 HS class coming into the year, and so did most of us. So I think that's part of why people are getting a little down, because that class didn't come to fruition.

Also, I don't see that much in the 2015 class to be overly confident about in the HS ranks.

I see that Brarrett Peery has resigned to take an unidentified D1 assistant job. That could be interesting for our future

Wish we had an opening. Those JC guys know how to recruit and are well connected.
I apologize in advance for the quick hijack, but do you know, is there a limit to the number of assistant coaches you can have on staff? Or is the limit based on recruiting hours and things like that?

Pretty sure it's 3 assistants recruiting. Not sure how GAs in basketball factor in and stuff.

I guess I don't see that. A few have made an observation about HS recruiting, not a judgment.

Plus it isn't like Vaughn was our only HS miss. He was just the one that was so close we could almost taste it. Unfortunately we passed on at least a couple of guys that I'm pretty sure we would love to have right now because of RV.

We quit recruiting everyone to recruit RV! We made the decision to sacrifice our shot at Cunningham and maybe Clark or whoever by not focusing on them. You can't just come in late on a guy and nab him easily.

If we spent as much time on Clark as RV, he would be a cyclone. No doubt about it.

How can you not see that?

You can call it a bad decision, but you can't question the staff's ability to recruit.
