ESPN Q&A with Tommy Mangino

Thought this was a pretty good read. Tommy seems like a solid hire. No-nonsense kind of guy that tells you like it is.

I liked this one:

When your dad was head coach, Kansas reached a level of success that almost seems unreal now. Can that level of success be reached at Iowa State?

Mangino: I don’t have a magic eight ball to tell you that. You never know. But what I can tell you is the plan is there and the mentality is there. Sometimes the chips fall your way. I can’t tell you being here a week or six months from now that we can win 12 games. But I can tell you a plan and everything is in place to have success. Whether that’s seven wins, eight wins, nine wins, whatever it is, you’ve gotta stick to your plan.

His comment about how the Jayhawks overcame a 20 pt deficit (they won 35-33) in 2008 piqued my interest. So, I looked back at the season results. While we had a dismal 2-10 showing, I forgot that we had a real strong shot at being 4-1, even 5-0, to start the season. An OT loss to a school that shall remain nameless, a lead we couldn't maintain vs KU, and a momentum-shifting, bogus personal foul penalty on LJ (legal at the time), that kept a critical drive alive & breathed new life into a lifeless EIU offense. Not sure that starting out 4-1 or 5-0 would have changed that season's fortunes, but I'm willing to bet at least one more win (@Colorado) could have been achieved had we won a couple more games to begin the season.

Just caught that on ESPN as well. Wonder if Tommy was getting annoyed when question after question was in regards to his father and what he's been up to and capable of. Just looking to get back to a bowl next season and hopefully see some consistancy out of the QB position to build the future around.

You know, I know the "father/son" thing has been brought up a lot. I, of course, hope that he is capable (and I believe he is...Mark even shared Tommy had to "earn it" by putting in work elsewhere)...you can't help but think it would help with some coaching staff stuff....meaning, they probably are more honest with each other and also more trusting.

He had to expect that. His identity right now in coaching is as Mark Mangino's son. They wouldn't be interviewing him otherwise.

Mark said (at the CF recruiting party) that Tommy would be out of his will if he screws up, so I'm sure he'll do a good job.

Meh. Nobody is interviewing him at all if his last name was Jones, either. Wideout coach isn't very high up in the pecking order.
