Jerry Myles - MBB recruit

I think we need to start landing at least 1 Iowan every 1-2 years. Obviously that doesn't mean take sub-par guys, but this state has averages a legit player or two every year. Unfortunately, recently they've all chosen Iowa or other programs.

It's hard enough to recruit against teams like Baylor and KU, but when you write off your entire state in recruiting, it makes it that much harder.

I feel like Jok this year was worth taking a shot with.

That's the right way

To everyone that hates our recruiting efforts in the state of Iowa:

Fred will start getting the very good Iowa players. He's become a tremendous recruiter. We didn't land guys like Gessel (even though he's technically from Nebraska, but Nebraska isn't a factor for any decent recruits to want to go to), Oglesby, Uthoff, and Woodbury because Fred was still unproven. McCaffery had head coaching experience and did a fantastic job at Siena. That worked out to his favor. Had Hoiberg been a successful coach elsewhere before ISU, at least one of those guys would've signed with ISU at the time. If these guys were seniors now, Hoiberg would probably have one or two of them committed by now. Jok is a vastly overrated mediocre player that we gave up on as well. Paige left the state of Iowa because he clearly wanted to be a blue blood just like Barnes.

This doesn't mean that I want all of these Hawks on our team, just using their names as examples. It doesn't bother me that we aren't signing Iowa kids, but I guarantee you that if there was an extremely talented player coming out of Iowa next year, Fred would do everything he can to get him. Iowa is a very small state (population-wise), so it's not like they're guaranteed a 4 or 5 star player every year. There will be another year like two years ago with the talent in the state of Iowa, and Fred will pick up at least one guy from there. Have some faith and don't use the past when Hoiberg was inexperienced as a reason to worry about us not getting talent from the state of Iowa. It's not that he has given up on the state, because he will get a few talented players from there by the time he's done coaching at ISU.

Didn't woodmonkey show up for a visit wearing hawk gear? Face it, most of these kids are probably hawk fans. I think with Fred's continued success will push through some of that but ignorance is just that.

Maybe not a good coaching strategy but I would have kicked him off campus and sent him back home if he showed up wearing another school's gear, especially the in-state rival.

I am sick of not being a factor in in-state recruiting. It's too hard to get talented players to visit and like Iowa, to not be a player for the small handful of recruits that the state does produce.

We need to land this kid.

For some reason, this struck me as really funny.

I think Fred is doing ok. Heck, I would go so far as to say he was even doing fine when this gem was originally posted.

I still believe you need to factor into recruiting in-state. Obviously I'm not worried as Fred has proven he'll always bring in talented players.

But, I still think it's important to land good players that come from your state because it helps build the ISU fanbase within the state.

I'm not suggesting we take crappy Iowa players just to take them, but when the occasional 4-star player is available we need to factor in with them.

The state is currently in a drought of talented b-ball players, but in the past has probably averaged 1 good player every 1-2 years. When they're available, I hope Fred can land them.

This is a much more reasoned response than the post I quoted.

I agree with you. But I would think that as more of these kids grow up watching Iowa State basketball, they will be more receptive to listening to Fred, playing at Iowa State. Especially if the level of success is maintained, or increased.

don't forget we had call documentation issues that caused us to stop recruiting Jok and others perhaps. in state recruitingng will look different in the future if Fred wants it to.

Am NOT sad we missed out on jok. However, if Jeremy Morgan wants to leave UNI, I'd be totally cool with that.

why is there such a sense of superiority for isu's academics over iowa's then on here when all rankings say the opposite?

I have degrees from both. So I have a literally educated opinion. ISU was a grind. Iowa was cake.

When I applied to Iowa, I was concerned about the classes, because I didn't have any experience in that field. The guy said "you have an engineering degree from ISU, and your GPA was X. You have NOTHING to worry about." He was right.

OK, that said, of course Iowa is a great school especially in certain fields (medicine etc) - I am certainly not saying it's bad. My daughter may go there and I would be OK with that based on her field of study. But you will NEVER convince me that Iowa's academics are better.

As was said above, rankings are about statistics based on data that has always been "cleansed", and weighted arbitrarily by people trying to create a story to sell something.

I think being #9 in the country helps build a fanbase more than one in state kid coming in and fighting for minutes. I'd love to get Myles and hope we do but Fred is going to get 4 star kids no matter what and I don't really care where they come from since he'll get them to produce

Why do we care about Iowa recruiting? There's been few good ones in the past couple years. HB and Doug obviously. Then there is Marcus Paige and Uthoff and maybe Peter Jok, but he's not comparable to the first 4. I couldn't care less if we have a single guy on the roster from Iowa. I like to win games, and if we load up our roster with the Mike Gessells and Adam Woodburys of the world we won't be doing that.

This is key. If we get a choice between a three star above average player in state vs a four star from out of state, out of state it is. Just get the talent here.
