ClearChannel, which owns about 7 stations in Des Moines and Ames, flipped both 105.1 and 106.3. 105.1 is now contemporary and 106.3 is alternative. So head up the dial to 106.3.

I'm not sure either why they flipped them.

Anyone remember way back when when 105.1 (now 106.3) was 107.1 and 107.5 was alternative?

What?? Wasnt 106.3 just playing Christmas music for 2 months, how can you flip from that to Metallica in just a few short minutes?

Not entirely sure....but I assume 106.3 was hitting too close to home to the big dog 107.5 in song selection/programming and they wanted different audiences for both. Just my hypothesis.

Get satellite radio. You'll wonder why you tolerated those stupid commercials for so long.

I remember when 107.5 went on the air. I think it was "the dot" or "the point" or something.

This. I cant believe that people still dont have it. BRB, having 50 rock stations to choose from. No commercials.

Its a giant ripoff though unless you threaten to cancel every 6-12 months. $160 a year plus fees? Yeah no.

I had a feeling the Christmas music on 106.3 was a stunt and a new format would appear after Christmas. The demographic reach of new rock/alt. music is greater than in DSM than in Ames. Yes, Ames is a college town, but i'm guessing the format is hard to sell when the target audience is gone 4+ plus months out of the year.

I have a free year of XM in my truck and I like it but probably won't pay for it. If I traveled a lot I probably would.

On the other hand, they just released an app that works with Pandora, Iheart, and Slacker that's pretty sweet and would be a good replacement for XM.

My experience with XM is that it's great at first, but after a while you start to notice that stations play a lot of the same stuff over and over again, which is fine but a little disappointing. I found myself only listening to sports radio after a while and eventually cancelled it.
