Outlook data file question for your IT guys.

Have you rebooted the machine since you did the backup?

Otherwise give Process Explorer a shot, it can show you what program has a handle on the file

Process Explorer

Make sure Outlook is not running when you try to copy the file. Outlook puts a lock on PST files, and it may prevent you from copying your backup while Outlook is open. Also, just closing Outlook may not completely shut it down, so to make sure it is completely shut down, I would log out, log back in and then try to copy the PST file as the first thing you try.

I am pretty sure the .OST file is your actual live Outlook file. The .PST files are your personal folders. If you are working with a .PST file, copy it to your C drive. Then from Outlook, Click on File, then Open, and Open Outlook Data File. From there, you can enter the name of the .PST file.

You can always move the emails or contacts back to your main folder once you've got your personal folder open.

I tried copy/pasting it to my C: drive and get the same error message. I have to wireless backup hooked up by ethernet cable to my laptop and still get the same message. This sucks

Tried this too with the same result. I started my outlook and notice the pst file outlook is using now is the same name as the name on the wireless backup. I have tried to change the name on the back up and all it does is lockup windows explorer.
