Hate for lolo?

Here's a question:

Why is (was) it okay to make fun of Kournikova for being just big boobs in a short skirt that can't win on the big stage, but NOT okay for people to take shots at Lolo for her looks getting her more attention than her athletic triumphs?

Remember, Kournikova had doubles titles, and was still good enough to be in those tournaments and be ranked in the world top 20 at times.

What is such a huge difference in the two situations *other than* Lolo is local to us, and probably why people are taking offense?
 
Not saying Lolo haters are right or wrong or fair...just find it interesting how its acceptable for to fire away on certain good-looking athletes, but when it get's aimed at "your" or "our" girl, it's out of line.

Just playing devil's advocate...

Doubles? Come on.

Kournikova won about 62% of her singles matches. Had 0 WTA singles titles.

21 Slam singles appearances. Eliminated in 1st or 2nd round 9 times. Only made it to the quarters twice (including one semi).

Her Slam wins in doubles (all two of them) were in Australia with Martina Hingis, just one of the top 4 players in the world at the time.
 
i'm not a lolo hater but i can see why many people do get turned off by how much of her personal life (especially her dating life) she spills on twitter

it may not be her motive, but telling her million followers (who are probably 75% men) all about her dating struggles along with being a virgin is about the easiest way to get sympathy and attention from 50,000 desperate guys

I guess as someone who doesn't follow track and field I just see her as someone who bit it on the last hurdle in Beijing.

Side note, I've never heard of 60m hurdles until right now. Is that in the Olympics?

Yeah what a slouch. I'm clearly better than her at tennis, and have made it to the finals of grand slam tourneys multiple times.

Anna Kournikova is attacked for being more popular and more visible because of her looks than other athletes at the top of her sport that have accomplished more than her.

Lolo Jones is attacked for being more popular and more visible because of her looks than other athletes at the top of her sport that have accomplished more than her.

Still seems to be basically the same situation to me, except one only one is from Iowa.



Yeah, Lolo has had more relative success than Anna as a professional but they both have not won on biggest stage of their respective sports.

I'm sure I could dig up a pretty impressive list of amateur accomplishments Anna K has if I wanted to, but that's not exactly the point. You can't just look at professional singles titles for Anna (zero) and then bring up a bunch of collegiate and other previous achievements Lolo has when really the subject of the article is about the Olympics and international competition.

Again, I'm not saying they're fair or right, just interesting how things get justified or not.

Anna K isn't on the same planet as Lolo as far as how good she is at her respective sport. Lolo was at the top of her sport in 2008 and 2009, and has been dealing with injuries since.

Anna K was one of the hottest women in the world who happened to be good at tennis. Lolo was one of the best women in the world at hurdels and happend to be hot. (See Maria Sharapova) Big difference.

Yes. Lolo is better at track than Anna was at tennis. Never said she wasn't, but ok.

The argument being made, by many, is that Lolo is getting more pub, more attention, more everything than runners that are BETTER than her because of how she looks and her statement about virginity.

What about that argument is false, other than we like Lolo so we're going to get defensive?
She has marketed herself well. Credit to her.

I'll leave out any parallels from now on with other women athletes in that position so as to not hijack the thread.

Four years ago she was the best hurdler on the planet and probably wins that race 7 times if they run it 10 times. She screws up, loses, handles it amazingly, gets hurt, fights her way back, and makes the olympic team which is a complete shocker. If Dawn Harper or Kellie Wells have a BETTER story than that, I'd love to hear it.

If either if those 2 win a medal, I think it will be a better story.

I don't need too, the one about the girl that fell down in front of a couple billion people is better.

Also, if you're Dawn Harper and had the 2008 gold medal fall in your lap because the girl in first with 20 meters to go screws up and becomes the big story, that has to **** you off a lot. Fastforward to 2012 and Lolo makes the team, that has to nearly send you through the roof. I don't think Lolo also being better looking is necessary for Harper to hate her.

Maybe you should try it out...educate yourself before commenting on a subject.
