wyocy;1163033 My main memory from the last season is another typical cyclone heartbreaker...we had an all Big 8 safety named Barry Hill who said:
I was at that game, too! Had a sideline photo pass for a photography class. Still have numerous prints including at least one of Joe Washington (he went through at least 5 pair of cleats including one silver pair). Funny thing about the field conditions; in an effort to slow down Washington, they left the grass long and watered the field all week, knowing that the game day forecast was for rain. They even left the tarp off the field on Friday when it did rain. Didn't work, though. Pretty sure Washington went for more than 200 yards that game. The guy was a stud.

I also remember Barry Hill. Humble and quiet spoken. I was in a photography class with him. Great player who I believe was drafted by the Dolphins.

Regarding the Clyde, one fun tradtion was to toss oranges onto the field when we scored our first touchdown (the winner of the Big 8 went to the Orange Bowl). I remember K-State players picking up oranges and chucking them back at the ISU students in the south end zone (had a press pass for that game, too).

I've got a black and white double-exposure photo of one of the goal posts over a deterorating brick entryway wall ...kinda cool.

It was definitely old school, but a fun environment.

Until recently I think there would have been parking north of State Gym/Beyer (pic below looking north in '68), but they still would have needed more. Tailgating would not have been as "professional", but would have engulfed the campus and surrounding neighborhood. Does anyone know when the track was removed? I went to hundreds of ISU events as a kid, but never really went around that part of campus. I can remember looking down Sheldon from Lincoln Way when it was pretty much all undeveloped.

It is arguable which location is better imo, but I think it is fair to say CW Field had better gates/fencing:

Your Freshman recollection must of included too many drugs. I was at the game as a middle-schooler. ISU was tied I believe @ half 7-7 or 10-10, but OU owned the 2nd half

Sitting in one end zone, I remember Joe Washington getting loose a couple times (I believe he came in 2nd or 3rd in the Heisman voting) and a long bomb from Steve Davis to Tinker Owens---right toward me. A thing of beauty.

I remember OU scoring at least 3 more times in the 2nd half and putting ISU away early--not later

The final was 28-10. I also don't recall mud or rain

nice story though:wideeyed::rolleyes:

College Football Data Warehouse

That's how I recall the game, too, except that the field was wet. And yes, that pass to Tinker Bell was a thing of beauty.

Clyde Williams was my introduction to ISU sports. It's when I became a fan. Seeing Luther Blue run the second half kickoff back for a touchdown versus KSU - priceless.

If I'm recalling correctly, the track wasn't removed until long after the stadium was gone - I used to run on it when I was an ISU student. At least I ran on an outdoor track behind state gym - whether that was the original or not, I don't know. I always assumed it was.

For the record, when the new stadium was opened, student seating was still first come first served, and you could bring alcohol in. It was also a massive race up the hill - carrying our wineskins full of Whiskey of course - to get the best seats.

Wish I had more history. What I can tell you is that my brother was one of the guys that stormed the field before a game and took away the big flag the Nebraska cheerleaders were carrying and ran back to the ISU student section with it. The crowd went wild. His favorite story to this day. Of course, stories evolve over the years, but I choose to believe. Maybe why I'm still a Cyclone fan...

..... Dexter Green and Luther Blue ..... and Tork's Pub on West Street :yes::yes::yes::yes::yes::yes::yes: .... God Bless Cecil and his sister Marge The Barge.......

Can someone give me a landmark? Where is this from campus town or the Union?

West on lincolnway......it was right across from where Taco Bell, and is it Kum and go? is on that intersection...bunch of new buildings on top of it now.

They left it an open area til about 10 years ago.....left the track and field open for whatever.....was never happy they took that away.

Below is a pic on that field (State gym in back)......bottom left is my great great uncle Jack....who played on that team with Trice. I have this in a huge frame in the mancave.

Love the old photos both for historic value and orienting to current day campus. Cool to think of the history that happened where folks walk/live/park now.

Wishing Hy Vee was still on the edge of campus too....

Never gonna happen. That was part of the master plan for the previous director of the DoR, but he's long gone and so is his ridiculous plan. Helser's capacity is too high, a suite building's is too low. Suites are more expensive than most people want to pay, so demand is much lower as well. Eaton is traditionally in the last 20% of the res halls to fill up for a year, and the only reason Martin isn't the same way is because they have a couple of large learning communities housed there. Besides, they completely gutted Helser in summer 2008 and redid the whole thing. It's a nice building now, and good to go for another 50-65 years.

When we need more res hall space and have the money, I can pretty much guarantee you where it will come from, in this order: turning Wallace and Wilson back into double housing (instead of super singles), adding west wings to Buchanan 5-9, and eventually building entirely new res halls down in the Towers area. That area is destined to be a new campus anyway, as this last round of construction has literally filled up every available construction slot on campus. We can no longer build any new buildings without tearing down something else. As ISU grows in the future, we'll eventually turn Towers into a new south campus.

You sir are severely mis-informed. The first buildings on campus to fill up every year are Martin and Eaton. Eaton has only one learning community, Martin has none. Helser was NOT gutted and renovated in 2008. It is basically the same dorm that was there when it was built.

The DOR is not able to build anything for the next few years, because the Board of Regents will not let us until Martin and Eaton are paid off. There is still space available on campus to construct new buildings, we just can't at the moment.

tied the game a 23-23. I remember how loud it was being down on the floor. Then Tom Goedjen Lined up and missed the extra point. I think it was wide left.

Do you all know that was Goedjen's only miss in his 4-year career! He was a great kicker, but missed the extra point that would have beaten the National Champs (from previous year). How bad is ISU's luck?

I'll never forget the shock of Goedjen's miss (as a very young Cyclone fan).

Most forget that the Nebraska kicker (Randy Sanger?) also missed an extra point earlier in the game. The game seemed destined for a tie. I've been hanging on to that small bit of consolation for the past 40 years.

It was Willie Jones who caught the pass from GA. The hold on the extra point was not pointed the way sidewinders like it, thus the shank LEFT. Goedjen never left his locker area for two hours after the game.
this, .... i was in the locker room ---- some of us were happy with a tie until JM let us know otherwise.

It was bad.

I had a couple of classes with Tom ( guess that ages me huh?) and became friends mainly because he was very interested in a female friend of mine who happened to be in the same biology class as us.

Anyway....that night after the game.... a bunch of my friends and I went to a bar downtown called "That Place". I have no idea what is there now, or if it still is in existence. We were sitting at "picnic tables" and later Tom came in with friends and stopped by our table. He made one comment..."Not such a good finish today huh?". A drunk female friend of mine sitting across from me, who did not know Tom from Adam, went "Yeah, bad finish. Did you see that ******* ******* miss that kick? What a *********! Tom was laughing but right after that, I introduced the two of them.

The DOR may not be able to build, but ISU sure can. I disagree with the Towers area being a south campus. Yeah, campus is pretty full now. They're going to end up razing buildings to build new ones now. We're going to see a new Student Innovation Center for Engineering where Nuclear Engineering and the parking lot to the east of NE sits (possibly part of Sweeney too. And you can bet that once Ag/BioE moves to the new building being built next to Howe, Davidson gets the wrecking ball. Not sure what they're going to put there. Other than that, there are plenty of old buildings on campus that could be razed if ISU comes into some money. Science II comes to mind. I've also heard that the DOE may be interested in razing Metals Development and putting up a new building there.

As for the DOR, I think that they've moved the remaining Towers back to double occupancy and they're investing a bunch of money in rennovations there. I would guess that if enrollment continues to increase, two new dorms will go up where the old Towers that were demolished sat.

The Board of Regents will not let the DOR build new dorms. The DOR is currently exploring ways to increase space availability, and building new dorms is NOT one of them.

Beyer Hall (Swimming) was new? my first year-1964. (Building to north.)Freshman were required to pass 100 meter or take mandatory quarter swimming.

Prior to my fall enrollment, I was required to take a multi day summer orientation. I stayed in what was then a women's dorm (name?) on the corner NW of the stadium. Rooms were doubles with common bath in between. Probably the first time I had stayed overnite away from home.......

I'm pretty sure in those days freshmen weren't eligible to play, so he really had only 3 years. But your point is still valid, with only one miss for his 3 year career.
