Edit -- too bad that Pete Taylor couldn't have survived to see this site up and running. It would have been great to have him as a poster on this site. Particularly on ISU athletics history.

Makes me wonder what the usernames are of some other current names in Iowa State. You know they all have at least been on here before, even if they dont post. Hell, i swear by some of BFs twitter posts that he has to be a CF reader.

I know its happened at other schools... ive heard the former president of texas a&m and now our secretary of defense Robert Gates came on and posted who he was on one of their boards... he'd been posting incognito for some time, sometimes throwing up trial balloons to see what people thought.. (cyaggie may be able to go into more detail on this story)

I just had this got this picture in my office. It is a 1966 view of campus. I had it blown up to 48" x 36". You can see the addition going on the south side of Clyde Williams Stadium. Lots of other things have changed on campus too. Veenker is really neat to see the original lay out (before 13th street and Ontario connected)

This pic is awesome!! Its crazy seeing how much existed where North Ames is today..literally nothing!

I walked past that 1,000 times in college, I never put 2 and 2 together to figure out what those gates were for.

I would love to be able to go back and experience a game at Clyde Williams Field in the early 70's. Old pics of that area and Ames in general are really cool to see. I wish there were more of Clyde Williams around somewhere

I think so, look at the corner of Sheldon Ave and Union Dr. I think they are still on Google maps.

Didn't take time to look when I was last in town (Christmas). Unless the State Gym expansion took them out (doubtful) they should still be there.

I was about 8 to 10 years old and remember kegs under the bleacher/stands. What a great thing to remember.

I love hearing stories from my buddie's parents (ISU alums) about how they snuck a keg up into MWL every week..Can't imagine what would happen now with that..Why's everyone got to be so sensitive

I was there. We sat in the end zone. The NE fans sat across the aisle in the end zone too, in back of the goal posts.

Best memory was of the 23-23 tie with Nebraska. The place went crazy! Then the extra point kick was missed, and everyone was in shock.

This was my first ISU football game, I was a high school senior and some buddies told me I had to come to a game. It was awesome, they were passing girls up to the top, people were throwing oranges and there was much alcohol. Needless to say, I was hooked!

My main memory from the last season is another typical cyclone heartbreaker.. lol. This is purely from memory, but as i recall, we were leading Oklahoma late in the game, which was played primarily in a driving downpour. There were only a few hundred faithful left, who were only there cause we were leading OU. With a few minutes to go, deep in their own territory, OU threw a little screen pass to Joe Washington, who some of you might remember, had a decent pro career. Washington proceeded to weave back and forth across the field, through the mud, eventually taking it to the house after covering what seemed like about the entire field. We had an all Big 8 safety named Barry Hill who, I swear to God, had at least three different shots at him at various points on the field, missing him every time. Never forget that one.

Your Freshman recollection must of included too many drugs. I was at the game as a middle-schooler. ISU was tied I believe @ half 7-7 or 10-10, but OU owned the 2nd half

Sitting in one end zone, I remember Joe Washington getting loose a couple times (I believe he came in 2nd or 3rd in the Heisman voting) and a long bomb from Steve Davis to Tinker Owens---right toward me. A thing of beauty.

I remember OU scoring at least 3 more times in the 2nd half and putting ISU away early--not later

The final was 28-10. I also don't recall mud or rain

I spent 70-75 in this area as a 6-10 year old kid. (stucco house with the fan on the second floor, still standing today). The locker rooms were on the east side off Clyde, next to Helser. Spring ball was were the current design building is today( between AE and the tennis courts on the south side) . They used to walk acroos the street to the east side of Beyer and then to the pracitce area. They used to have a hockey rink next to Beyer on the north side. The practice facility was fenced and Coach Bruce always had it black tarped, so you couldn't see in.... I always went over there and got in... Great times, great memories... Clone to the Bone!

That's a really cool pic. Sometimes i wish Trice was where Towers is with Welch being the main connector from campus to the stadium. The gameday atmosphere would be awesome

I don't know what the permanent seating capacity was, but do know (by checking the archives) that the record CW crowd was 36,690 for the '72 Nebraska game. I was at that game, my first ISU game, and recall an ISU student seated a little ways from me almost beaning a Husker fan with an empty glass bottle, Dave McCurry rolling off the field with a broken leg, the last drive and touchdown pass, and of course, Goedjen's missed extra point. Geez, even then we must have had a kickers curse.

at half time we'd use the restrooms in Helser then go to Hy-vee one block south and get another 12 pack. Good times

Good stuff here. My biggest memory of Clyde Williams also had to do with the Nebraska tie game. I was a kid and was down on the field under the south goal post....I guess you could wander anywhere in those days...and saw Ike Harris(?) I think it was catch the touchdown pass that tied the game a 23-23. He caught it in the southeast corner area of the end zone. The place went nuts. I remember how loud it was being down on the floor. Then Tom Goedjen Lined up and missed the extra point. I think it was wide left. Man.

My brother was a kicker on the freshman team that year so he knew Goedjen. After the game we went to Kings Food Host on the corner of Linclon Way and Grand Ave. If anyone remembers that's the place where you ordered your food using a phone system hooked up to the kitchen. Anyways while we were it just so happened that Goedjen and his family walked in and sat down. After we were done my brother took us over to meet him. I remember feeling so bad for him. You could tell he was devastated.

That's not a bad idea for a location, but if it was built there we wouldn't be able to enjoy the mass tailgating that we have now. I don't think there's any way we could fit the tailgating into that area.
