Barnes and his quest for NC

I didn't like that either and agree it was Bush league. I have to say though, it's as much our fault as it is his. there was so much hype around him, I think he actually believed the city of Ames would be happy for him. He felt everyone loved him for being Harrison Barnes, not ISU's savior. If we as fans didn't put so much importance on sports, we wouldn't have things like this happen.

I do hope that with HB's debacle of a gathering and the "I'm going to take my talents to South Beach" wonder of entertainment that more athletes will realize that if you aren't choosing us, we don't care. So next time, make it a local show for the town you are going to, not the one you are leaving.

This! From what I've been told, he's a terrific kid (you don't exactly date Trisha Nesbitt because you're a jerk). I have little doubt that he believed he's friends, neighbors, etc. would all be happy for him. And they should have been, IMO. Does he stop being the same great kid you've known forever just because he decides not to play for ISU? was naive? Obviously. But that doesn't mean he was the villain. The people who reacted with such anger, hate, and bitterness who were/are the villains in this whole affair.

He wants to use basketball as a platform, and UNC gave him arguably the best place to lay that foundation. I just don't see why that is such a big deal.

I don't blame HB in any way for choosing to play for North Carolina. I mean, it's tough to turn down a top-shelf program like that, especially when our program was in such poor shape.

But I do have a tough time forgiving the way HB made his announcement, big-timing his hometown fans like that. It was a smaller, more local version of the LeBron James announcement. Nobody would begrudge a press conference and for him to have his moment, but to throw the doors open and invite everyone then Skyping Roy Williams...that's just a shameful thing to do.

Exactly my thoughts as well.

Please explain the Trisha Nesbitt comment. Is it universally known that she doesn't date jerks? Very weird statement.

She's known as an incredibly nice (and religious) person. Just doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would put up with a jerk.

I never understood why we aren't allowed to "hate" Barnes by some posters on here. We "hate" the hawkeye players for their choice of schools, and a few of them may be good guys of good character (although a pretty small percentage). Why aren't we allowed to dislike Barnes for his choice of schools?

Like others have McDermott had nothing going at ISU. If it was 1 year later I think things could have been different. I understand his decision to play for UNC. However, that doesn't mean I enjoy seeing him lose either.

Just don't understand the hate for a guy that is a complete class act, is from Ames, and wanted to go to a school that is over 1,000 miles away and is in a different conference from us.

back to back elite eights at iowa state, HB is a legend, giving freddy a run for most popular player of all time.

back to back elite eights at UNC, and HB is viewed as the most overrated recruit in UNC history and many UNC fans will think "good riddance."

You are soooo right re Carolina, It the heels dont win a National Championship every year their fans are disappointed.

And your also right about the "good riddance" quote.....

About the only things that I took joy in from Carolina losing were:

1) A Big 12 school beat them
2) All the closet UNC fans on Facebook took to gnashing their teeth and tearing at their clothes because St. Louis was "a home game for KU", ignoring the fact that UNC gets to play like 90% of their tourney games in their home state at Greensboro, Charlotte, etc
3) (and this was the best one) Seeing the close-up of Dickson Jensen after the game decked out in Carolina Blue, hands over his head and tears in his eyes...gotta latch on to your lottery pick and hang on tight as an up-and-coming AAU program

It's amazing that someone that young could be such a complete sleazyball

I don't consider HB sleazy because he was out to create a brand. It is inconsistent, however, for folks to create a mythical teen who was humble and naive. The fact is that he knew damn well what he was doing with that circus announcement--he was cold, calculating, manipulative and decidedly unhumble.

Wow. I've thought it many times before, but you're an idiot. Nothing in that link says "sleazyball". Confused, misguided, perhaps. But not sleazy. Barnes is still the terrific person he's always been, from the sounds of it.
