***OFFICAL: I BOOKED MY TRIP THREAD***

Just booked Hilton NY Fashion District on Priceline for $125 for the 30th and 31st if anyone is still debating on going...really nice 4star for pretty cheap...heres what their website says

Located on West 26th Street, just off 7th Avenue, the hotel is in the heart of Manhattan’s remarkable Fashion District. Hilton New York Fashion District is steps away from the Fashion Institute of Technology, The Empire State Building, Herald Square and the renowned Macy’s flagship. Times Square, Central Park, Tribeca, Soho, Chelsea Market and everything New York City are just an amazing walk or cab ride away

Question for some people more familiar with the area....we are driving in and should get to NYC area early in the AM on the 30th (7 or so) but can not check in til 3 (so after the game), any ideas what to do with the car or a good plan of attack? TIA

Wow, you did pretty well. We are staying at the Hilton at the Newark airport for $99/night. We are just taking the NJTransit into NYC the 29th and 30th. We tried priceline in NYC for the same price range but no luck but the newark hilton will be fine. Plus we are flying out of Newark so it will be very easy for our 6 AM flight on the 31st

Your first step should be to contact the front desk of the hotel and ask what they suggest as they know the neighborhood best and I'm sure they probably deal with this often. Where you're staying is on the edge of midtown, so you'll probably be able to find free on-street parking a bit to to the South of you, but that's by no means a certainty and the last thing you want to deal with is the ordeal and cost of getting towed. So if you choose to go that route, make sure you read and understand the signage on the street where you park i.e. alternative side parking, loading zones, etc.

4 Cyclones family members and a buddy I graduated with that lives in NYC are coming. Possibly be my last game as a Cyclone supporter :wideeyed:

+1 on contacting the front desk/concierge. The hotel has a parking garage, but there is a fee associated with parking. The number I remember is $44; I just can't remember if that is per day or for the duration of the stay.

Nice job. I think Priceline offered this hotel on the 29th and 30th for more than $500/night.

Staying in Manhattan is the way to go for us. We are flying to White Plains, so we will use a Metro North suburban train to get into Manhattan. Then we will buy 7-day bus/train passes to get to the game and around Manhattan for a few days. I think the 7-day pass will be cheaper than individual rides at $2.25 over the course of 3 days.

Are you serious about "wasting time" visiting the 9/11 Memorial?

It is my intention to see the 9/11 Memorial and find some of the fantastic places that guys like you recommend. I'm more likely to skip NYE at Times Square, maybe visit Times Square earlier in the day.

What else do you think would you recommend so that we can have an authentic NYC experience?

Spend time in neighborhoods where New Yorkers actually live. When we have out of town guests, I try to avoid at all costs Times Square. Some thoughts:

1. Take a walk on the High Line (an old elevated train track recently converted into a park) and have lunch at Chelsea Market (an indoor food court with all local vendors - no McDonald's or fast food)

2. Have a meal at the Bridge Cafe (located in an area just north of South Street Seaport at the base on the Brooklyn Bridge), it's the oldest pub / restaurant in Manhattan. While you're at it, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (trivia fact - the bridge was completed the same year Custer was killed at Little Big Horn).

3. Interesting places to get a drink - The Other Room (totally non-descript place in the West Village, candlelit, not for a group of dudes but a place to go with the wife .:: the room ::.), Campbell Apartment at Grand Central Station - literally was the apartment of the guy and is a totally unique place to grab a drink Grand Central Terminal Shops), McSorley's Old Ale (McSorley's Old Ale House),

4. Ice skate at Wollman Rick in Central Park.

5. If you are a runner, run the loop in Central Park (if you're not up for a 6 mile somewhat hilly run, do a lap around the Reservoir). or do the midnight run in Central Park on NYE as opposed to standing in Times Square.

6. Go to Fraunces Tavern in the financial district (the building where George Washington dismissed the officers of the Colonial Army after the Revolutionary War, also a restaurant with a recently opened pub next door called the Porterhouse or something like that).

7. Get out and walk around the West Village, Tribeca, Soho (that's where you want to take the wife shopping).

8. Get Dim Sum in China Town.

9. Take the East River Ferry to Williamsburg in Brooklyn or to Dumbo in Brooklyn.

Hope that is helpful. Please don't spend your time in Times Square or at places you could find anywhere (like chain restaurants).

Any idea how places like Snap or Studio XXI would be for NYE? How easy would it be to get back to North Bergen from there after the party?

Just booked at the Eastgate Tower Hotel near the UN via Priceline - $140/night, pretty fair compared to what we were seeing. Shout out to the Shatner!

Might be some walking involved, but no different than central campus, right? :)

See you all in section 407B!

I really don't know anything about either place. One, Snaps, kind of looks like it's where a club called Nell's used to be - given the address and pictures I just looked at - and that was a pretty swanky place. But I have no idea what a sports bar would like on NYE.

Club XXI seems like the kind of place that attracts kind of a trashy crowd, but that's just an impression based on nothing real. If choosing between the two of them, I'd probably go with the former though.

They're both in good locations for getting back to North Bergen. The PATH train to Hoboken stops at 14th and 23rd Street on Sixth Avenue, and you should be able to get a taxi to North Bergen right outside of Hoboken Station.

I really appreciate the help you guys are giving us. Some Iowa State fans were hoping to go to some other bowl. We recruit better in Texas and Florida. You guys seem to have NJ/NY wrapped up based on looking at your roster. And some wanted to enjoy the warm weather. However, we have embraced the idea of coming to New York. Frankly, once I started thinking about the city, I couldn't wait to go there.

Now, though, I have to ask if you are serious about walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. My wife has walked across the support beams of the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Is this something like that? Or is it just walking on a walking path? What is so cool about this experience? Or are you just doing an updated version of selling the Brooklyn Bridge to us? Be kind to us naive rural folks.

I also appreciate the sense of history that you guys have. Iowa State University is one of the oldest things that we have in Iowa. As I recall, Rutgers is at least 100 years older. And east coast folks have such a great sense of history. Folks who grow up in the midwest often just don't have much sense of colonial influence.

Never done it myself, but here is a view from walking across the Brooklyn Bridge I found on Google that has obviously since changed.

Thanks. I had to ask on behalf of my Iowa friends who have never been to New York. We are always a little suspicious of you big city folks. Most of the guys I know from New Jersey would love to send me to do something stupid and then laugh at me all night at the bar.

Its easy to get into :spinny:

New York was originally founded as New Amsterdam:
New Amsterdam

New Jersey at one point was at one point East and West Jersey, our last colonial governor was an illegitimate son of Ben Franklin, etc, etc ...
