The day the buffalo got loose...

I was a student at Iowa State in 1972 when we played Colorado. Normal proceedure was to get to the gate of Clyde Williams Stadium around 7:30 am (this was before tailgating was popular) and drink beer and get in the stadium first to sit on the 50 yard line. The entire west side was open seating. Before the team came on the field, students would form a human tunnel for the players to run through. After they ran on the field, CU ran on the field with their buffalo. A number of students (including me) were armed with oranges and apples and started pelting the live buffalo. It went crazy, got lose and pandmonium broke out. It ran all over the field until security people, and the CU people could subdue it. We went back to our seats on the 50 to watch the game. Two years later, they did not bring the live buffalo along.

This is HILARIOUS! You had me rolling. Rep to you.

Should we bring a tranquilizer gun or let this guy handle it:

Tranquilizer? Heck, I favor .45-70 or larger for "Ralphie".

While .45 - 70 is good for buffalo, I'd really like a big banger like a .45-110 to produce buffalo meat.

All you need is good aim and one shot, and you can nab yourself 989 pounds of buffalo. Unfortunately, you can only carry 200 back to your wagon. Meager rations and exhaustive pace for everybody!

One other note, very popular was passing people up the stadium. Students would get grabbed in a lower level of the stadium (cooperatively of course) and were passed up to the top of the stadium. It was amazing how far they would go getting passed above everyone. Is that still done in the student section?

I was an undergrad from 82-86. In the first year we still did some of the passing up, usually girls, but by the second year they were really clamping down and throwing people out of the stadium for it (OK, they were usually extremely intoxicated too). Back then it was the regular police, and they were armed. When they would come into the student section in force to throw someone out, we all chanted, "USE YOUR GUN! USE YOUR GUN!"

One game a couple of wisea**es from my floor brought a full size blow up doll (no, don't ask what they did with it during the week) and everyone shouted "Pass her up!" The cops came flying up the stairs (50 yard line 7 rows up in the upper deck) and then stopped in their tracks when they saw it was a blow-up doll. When it got to the top, everyone shouted "throw her over!" to which we did!

subdue it=buffalo burgers for tailgating???

did not bring the live buffalo along = hmmm... they only brought patties and steaks?

I did not know (until now) that Clyde Williams was and All-American Hawkeye Quarterback (1899 - 1901) before he became the Iowa State coach in 1906.

Pelting a buffalo is cool? Ok, you and I differ on this. I know it will not be popular, but colorado has one of the coolest mascots and best ways to enter the field on college football. This would be like booing the A&M band!

Peeing all over everyone's good time Brian ... and bringing a band into it? way to kill the buzz man! ... I couldn't be more troubled for you if you suddenly started calling sitcoms "cute".

One of my older brothers was at that game. He said is was pretty wild for a bit. I wonder if there is any video footage floating around anywhere?

We were lucky to have cameras, and never brought them to a game. Not sure anyone would have been sober enough to use them. Video cameras hadn't been invented yet. Wow, no VCR's, no cell phones, no video games. No wonder people drank.

I saw someone throw a shoe off the balcony into the section below and the Per Mar guy didn't do a damn thing about it

Who throws a show...honestly?

I agree with ya on this.

Good story but what did you think the buff was going to do when you threw fruit at it? Funny in hindsight but stupid thing to do really. No way in hell would that happen in today's society, PETA would be all over it.

You're right. There will be people upset that say "You shouldn't throw things at the buffalo, that's mean" and then go home and eat their hamburger, pork, chicken, etc. We kill millions and millions of animals each year to put in our belly but the second we are mean to one, crap hits the fan.

The funny thing is these PETA goofs come to livestock shows to protest and hand out stuff. That is one of the dumbest places to do that because show cattle are some of the most pampered animals on the farm. You basically just told them "well they just got a bath this morning, was fed, has clean bedding, and looks pretty content there lying down under the fan in this heat. you were saying?"

If we stopped killing animals for food you might as well sell your car because we'd over-populate pretty quickly and would not be able to drive anywhere as they'd be running all over the place. Seems so easy to say killing them is cruel but if we ever saw the results of not doing this I think you'd see a lot of these people flip sides quickly when it affected their every day lives.

Tell the Peta people we were trying to free the poor defenseless animal from the bonds of man. We were successful until he was recaptured. We only had the best interest of the Buffalo at heart. (How does that sound)

Here's the thing about PETA - they're not going to be happy until that cow is roaming free in the countryside, able to nibble on the grass on the rolling prairie. Not realizing that the rolling prairie is bisected by an Interstate highway, and as Bessie tries to cross it get smacked by an 18-wheeler. Now tell me, which is more humane - steak on the plate or steak smeared into pavement?

I thought there was no way someone would scold you guys for this great story but then I turn around there is "mom" and "dad"....brianhos and isufan. Good grief guys, how in the world can you look down your nose on throwing fruit at a buffalo like 30 years ago???

P.S. I say we all do this to Chip this weekend.
