***Official Minnesota Vikings Draft Pick Discussion Thread***

Re: Interesting...didn't realize Matt Millen was handling the Vikings draft this year

After having some time to think it over... the Ponder pick was a good one. The Vikes draft board had Ponder as the #4 QB overall and Andy Dalton as a distant 5th. Knowing that if they moved down at all, Ponder would likely be gone (as the Redskins were very high on him) they needed to jump on him there. As long as their scouting was good, it was a good pick.

Rudolph is also a very solid pick with the 2 TE offense that we will be running. Being able to get the best available player at a given position is always a good thing and that is exactly what happened here.

I am hoping that we address the secondary and both lines with our remaining picks. Who knows? Maybe David Sims would be a late-round grab for Minnesota.

We do have 7 picks left for the remaining four rounds (one 4, but two picks in each of rounds 5, 6, and 7) so we can either load up on value or bundle some to jump up and grab someone that we really like. I'm excited to see how we do.

Frankly, I'm happy with the picks so far....I know not many people aren't high on Ponder...but I like him. Good choice with Rudolph at TE though. It would be cool if the Vikings picked up Sims, and actually I've always thought A-Rob would be a good replacement for Chester (Good pass blocker, reliable hands) though after picking up Toby Gerhart last year that's been less important. It would be cool to see him drafted any where though. (though in all honesty I have my doubts)

I'll echo your sentiments by saying that even though I wish they could have taken him lower, I'm glad that the staff got the QB they wanted, and one that fits into the West Coast scheme that they'll be playing. Reports are that Musgrave was very high on Ponder before the draft. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Rudolph is going to be a great addition. He lets the Vikings come out in a two tight end set, and still have plenty of pass catching weapons on the field. He'll be a nice red zone threat as well.

Minnesota has 7 picks left. I hope they go out and add depth on the offensive and defensive lines.

I guess I would have taken Dalton but if the Vikes liked Ponder better, that's their deal. I just don't think he's ever going to me more than a poor mans Chad Pennington.

The Rudolph pick itself is fine, it's the fact they they are not addressing needs. What about their defense? It's not getting younger in the middle. There were a lot of guys out there to help out and the Vikings didn't take anything.

Minnesota was top 10 in the league last year in rushing defense, passing defense, and rushing offense. Passing offense? 26th. They've taken a QB and a pass catching TE, so far. How is that not addressing their needs? If they can add some O line and D-line depth in the later rounds, I will call this a successful draft.

Their defensive line was good, yes, but it's also relatively old. Who is going to replace the middle? What if Edwards isn't around a whole lot longer? What about Winfield? There's just a lot of aging parts to that defense and I felt they perhaps should have addressed that. Jared Allen has a few more years but he's damn near 30 and can't be expected to do it forever, especially if there isn't anyone lined up beside him.

agreed, they are getting older, and hopefully they address those positions with some of their upcoming picks, but the biggest need for this team was on offense, by a long shot, specifically in the passing game. Their draft so far is definitely trying to address that.

The Vikings are probably going to rely on LaTroy Guion to step up more. He is more than ready to be an NFL starter. He is a very good d-lineman.

Guion is definitely going to be relied on more. They also re-signed Robison at DE, who is a solid player as well. There's room for depth on the line, but it's not as glaring of a need as on offense.

I guess I agree with you there.

Ballard to Minnesota. Hate to say it. Good pick. He can play multiple positions on the line. Athletic guy.

Ballard is a great pick.

yeah, he's very solid. Fits in very well. And with the way Minnesota rotates on the D-Line, he'll get playing time right away. Can't complain about this one.

That, or he is a tweener.

I'm ok with that. Minnesota has a good history of athletic D-tackles who are smaller than the traditional prototype DT. See Henry Thomas and John Randle. Both were "tweeners" who played DT despite being under 300lbs.

I am still pondering Ponder. I saw how the rushing was stuffed at the end of the year. They still need the rookie to pull a lot of plays out of his tail for them to be successful. Having a lockout negates his development. It will be more Tavariis next year.

no it won't. T-jack was released quite a while ago. They'll probably sign a veteran when FA starts, someone like McNabb, and groom Ponder for hopefully a year.

If the Vikings pick Sims I would be so happy. They still have 6 picks left so a lot can still happen.

I'm pretty happy so far with this draft despite the Ponder pick, because it seems like the Redskins wanted Ponder at 16 anyway.
