CBI...Yes or No

Just an update on the poll in Keeler's article, 82% have said yes to 18% no. I completely agree with this. I see no way where we couldn't make up the $60,000 to pay to play in the CBI. This team has been so much fun to watch develop this year, I would buy tickets the minute they came out.
My main argument against the CBI from a playing perspective, is you are playing a team you'd likely schedule for a cupcake matchup at home in the non-conference.... Playing a crap team with 3 starters who won't be back next year will not help get your team ready for better competition. The only way to get ready for better compettiion, is to play a good team.
I don't care if the team gets any better for playing in the CBI or not (I think they could, but its debatable). I pay to watch ISU play cupcakes in the non-conference, and I'd pay to watch ISU play cupcakes in the post-season too. I don't care if its the NCAA, the NIT, or the CBI, I just want to see this team play more.
Are you speaking for ISU........or teams that may play ISU? It's not like our team woke up this morning, looked at their record and said "oh no". Because as much as I would love to debate the fact because of all the close losses and the direction in which it seems we are heading.....as of now, we ARE looked upon as one of those crap teams with 3 starters who won't be back. Our record speaks for itself. Add that to what happened the last four years and, well.....there you have it.

What have we done this year to prove that we are so much better than being in this tournament? We beat Nebraska once. By one point. If you go this year, next year when they get to the real dance everyone forgets about being in the CBI.
Besides, who doesn't want at least one more game to come out and cheer on DG, Jake, JVB, and the bunch?
Someone is going to bring up that if we want to be nationally relevant, than don't go. That's stupid, how is playing more games going to hurt national relevance? It's not the NCAA's or even the NIT, but it's still something. All we wanted in football was to get to a bowl game, last year it happened. Kind of a crappy bowl, but still a bowl nonetheless, and people were jacked. How is this really any different?

I agree here.
For now, let's play a tough game at K-State....and take each game one at a time in the B12 Tourney.
If we somehow make a little run, rack up a couple more in the W column and get invited to the NIT....obviously, let's play in that post-season tourney. Playing in the CBI, which is nationally looked at as a "laugher" is never good for image. (Especially in the eyes of younger recruits) Plus, it is not going to "magically" make our younger players better for next season.
No to CBI IMO.

Why don't some of you self centered individuals, who see this as it relates to YOUR ego, wake up and realize there is a group of seniors who would do anything to play another game together, who would love nothing more than to go out on a high note, who would love nothing more than playing in front of the Hilton faithful.
Quit making this about YOU, and think about the players.
I'm not sure how much there really is to the "The CBI is a joke of a tournament and you get laughed at for participating" argument. Now I'm not really saying that it isn't a joke of a tournament - it is. But do you really get laughed at for playing in it? No one really pays any attention to it. Could anyone name the teams that played in it before people posted it in this thread? I was shocked to find out that Washington played in it a few years ago. I don't remember national media hating on UW for participating. You never even hear about it, so who exactly would be laughing at us? Kansas? Missouri? Who cares? We don't do anything to please them. We are just trying to get better to the point where we can beat them consistently.
I'd say the only BCS "joke" would be Oregon St, which played in the CBI three straight years, never got better as a result, and likely aren't good enough to even get a CBI invite this year.
I don't understand why playing in the CBI is beneath us, when it's been years since we even could play in the CBI.

Isn't this is exactly what everyone said about the NIT in the early 90's? "That other tournament -- what's it called?" "It's an embarassment to go to the NIT." "No self respecting program should accept a bid to the NIT." "The NIT should just go away."
I think you misunderstood my post.. I wasn't calling us a crap team... I was saying we would be playing a crap team in the CBI... And I was also stating that 3 of our starters won't be here next year anyways, so the argument that something like this would help with the development of our players goes out the window.
Ejim is the only young guy that may start and Godfrey will be a factor. Both these guys have improved from playing quality teams in the conference, not playing teams we'd normally play in the non-con to stack up Ws.
If we were a team with 3-4 freshmen starting, I could see more of an argument. We have older guys starting and playing most of the minutes. Giving them a couple more games, isn't going to help the team out for the following year, IMO.
Actually, I think you can play in the CBI whenever you want. You pay to play. I think the Big 12 discourages teams from participating in this though, which is why there hasn't been a Big 12 team in this....
You don't know if that's true. They may be burned out and ready to be done. If they want to keep playing games, win games in the Big 12 tournament.
I still somewhat look down at the NIT. Okay, I'm not nearly as degrading over it as you are demonstrating, but it does completely pale in terms of the NCAA Tournament, and that fact doesn't change. However, I am not opposed because watching more ISU basketball is always fun. That being said, I hardly think that "making the NIT Final Four" or "qualifying for the CBI" are hardly bragging points.
I don't think it's an embarrassment, but I don't think it making the NIT should be an "end goal" of a season, nor do I think qualifying for it should signal a successful season (even if your program has been down on its luck for a few years). Nor do I think no self-respecting program should ever accept a bid - if the NIT is good enough for Syracuse and North Carolina, and the CBI is good enough for Washington and Virginia, Iowa State isn't "too good" for either tournament as well.
As far as the "NIT should just go away," the NCAA certifies new bowl games nearly every year. If it's okay to have completely meaningless bowl games, then I see no problem with having completely worthless basketball tournaments either.
Actually -- those are quotes from circa 1993 to compare with today where the NIT is considered less than the NCAA but -- respectable? To me it's ironic.
I doubt it. You have to be invited. As ironic as it sounds, I believe you have to be invited in order to pay the $60,000 to play the game.
