Best Unknown Guitarists

Josh Groban says they play guitar hero on his tour bus for fun. When asked who wins, replied, "Our lead guitar player. Strangely enough, those skills translate."

If you're going to say Jerry then don't you have to say Bob Weir too? I think Bob was as talented as Jerry. Listen to Bear's Choice or Workingman's Dead...

Hmm..I love Bob and all his cheesiness, great songwriter. Integral part of the Dead. Doesn't hold a candle to JG. Bob had/has some side/solo stuff too, but it's nothing great.

Although not unknown, John Frusciante

This guy Andy McKee is incredible.

Great thread considering I just started tinkering with the Guitar this week. Finger tips hurt and a long ways to go...

There is also some band about a hot air ballon or something.... I think his name was Page or something, I can't remember, it definitely dealt with a book though.

That'll happen...just keep going.

I totally forgot one unknown guitarist and considered one of the greatest guitarists ever. LENNY BREAU. genius. Too bad he died what, 25 years ago? Legend. I like what Steve Vai says in the second video:

A few guys to add:

Corby Yates - pretty legendary in the Bay Area. He was an absolute genius and was blowing the roof off places in the late '90s at 15 years old. Not too sure what he is up to these days.

Eric Tessmer - From Austin Texas. I have seen him a few times and I keep expecting to see him take off nationally. He is probably the best guitarist I have ever seen play live. Just phenomenal.

And of course, Yngwie Malmsteen. Not unknown, but I'll bet there are some on this site who don't know of him. As far as "shredding", he is the fastest I have ever heard. He plays mostly classical stuff and some 80s rock style stuff. Crazy fast but his metal rock sound gets old fast.

I'll add Jimmy Herring, Widespread Panic's lead guitar player the last couple years. He's got the blues licks down, has played in a ton of bands with a lot of other great talents. Sorry, you can youtube him yourselves.

Doug Martsch
Tom Verlaine
Thurston Moore (maybe not technically a great guitarist but certainly very influential)

The Genius of David Gilmour and The Pink Floyd. Live at Pompeii.

Potato Hole was a sweet album. It would have been fun to catch 'em live.

They played the song Potato Hole live, which as you know starts out a little strange. I believe the album was released only a few months before I saw them.

I'll get the rest of the album somehow...the whole concert was sweet. It was at Taste of Chicago, which has a free concert series of well known artists if you know about that (I saw Buddy Guy at it too).

I was surprised more people weren't there...I like DBT although i went to the concert to see Booker T. it was awesome.
