I'm still surprised Sonic hasn't come to Ames. There are plenty of fast food burger joints, but I think Sonic would do fairly well there.

id agree with that. heck, they could do with locations that didnt suck in des moines.

Lest we forget who now owns the furnature location, no other than Cyclone great Gary Thompson, I don't see the city stopping him from planting another strip mall. For one, he's Gary Thompson. Two, the turnover in the council moving pro business, and three, the footprint on that property in terms of the flood plain is almost non existent compared to the box stores.

The possible sites are:

1. The old ISU warehouse site between Target and Walmart

2. Part of the old Benson Motors site

3. Outlot along SE 5th between Target and Walmart.

4. The old O'Malley's spot combined with Ames Rental

5. Vacant lot where Ruttles used to be

One wild card that no one is talking about would be the SE corner of the Kmart parking lot. That store isn't making a dime, and if Eddie Lampert can either sell or lease off some real estate to monetize his Kmart investment, he would do that in a heart beat. It's not like Kmart is ever going to use all those parking spots, and the increase in traffic just may benefit sales within Kmart. The only negative for BWW is that it's not directly on Duff.

Another one would be the bowling alley. If Perfect Games pulls enough of their business away, selling out may make sense for them.

Site #2 would be the best, but at this point the money is too crazy to make it pencil. I don't know enough about the other properties pricewise to comment.

I would never put anything past the city of ames' pencil pushers. They like having the authority to make decisions and are pretty dead set on following the LUPP and all other codes to a 'T'. However, you have a good point about the land where the furniture store was. The issue with the Petco site had more to do with wells and storm runoff than parking or other issues.

You seem to know quite a bit about the BWW situation. Are you saying they haven't chosen a location yet or are you just throwing out possibilities? The Benson Motors site and the O'Malleys/Ames Rentals site will probably not be developed for several years the way the economy is slowly recovering.

I went to the Little Caesars in Cedar Falls expecting to relive some of my childhood memories. When I was a kid I remember Pizza Pizza being the most amazing thing ever. After having it as an adult, I now realize that my parents must have loved when I would ask for Little Caesars...2 pizzas and a 2 liter for $10?! The crust tastes like flour and water, the sauce tastes like tomatoes, and the cheese tastes like cheese. Pizza in its simplest form...and for $5 each. Does it get any better for a college kid?

And the snozberries taste like snozberries.

Tradewinds was a bar that offered a limited food menu. It was the main hangout for city league slowpitch teams on summer nights. Karaoke on Fridays.

Block north of Main, near Duff. Next to EJ's, or Dangerous Curves, or whatever that place is/was called.

Ames Tribune > Archives > Ames Tribune > News > Tradewinds says goodbye

In the early 90's Steve always had 'Mom's chili' on hand and made-while-you-wait subs. The meat slicer was behind the back bar and the chili was made onsite. It was either the late 90's or early '00's that the 'Winds starting offering more selections and opened up for lunch.

...says the old bartender.

so...when did you bartend at the winds?

Well, if my memory isn't totally shot ... summer 91-92 or 3... can't remember how long, but pretty sure of the start date.

That's before I ever went there.

Spent a ton of time at Tradewinds between 2000 and 2004. Friday nights during the summer were always the best. I don't think I ever saw the men's bathroom in full working order for more than 20 consecutive minutes in the time that I went there.

But, they mixed the drinks strong, and Steve had a great knack for hiring "talented" bartenders. I loved that place.

The Stanhope locker is pretty pricey. They think that their beef jerky apparently is the cost equivalent of gold too.
For the Ames area I go to Fareway usually just because you can see the meat, if you go to ISU, you can't see it (other than brats, jerky). ISU has all of their meat already packaged in the back.
For the metro peeps, try the B and B:
Des Moines Iowa Deli Shop | Des Moines, IA Deli Sandwich | Des Moines, Iowa Butcher Shop Meat Market | B&B Grocery, Meat & Deli

B&B is where I go for a cut of meat. Or a GREAT sandwhich. The place is a true Des Moines institution, and last time I was in, the owners said they were in talks with Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives".

*sigh* I feel old. But mildly pleased that the bartenders were 'talented'.

One of my most memorable bar tending moments happened at the 'winds. Long story short... Saturday night, natural gas leak at back of building, full house at BJs Lucky Lady next door and I have to call 911. Initially, put on hold by 911 operator. Firefighters arrive in explosion gear and contemplate closing down whole area. Instead, jam bar towels down gas pipe and duct tape. Tell me to stay there till gas company comes. Um, okay, I think. Steve returns from softball tournament minutes after all the firetrucks leave. I tell him the story and he looks at me like I made it all up. It's funny now - not so much when it was happening.
