Milwaukee Mcdermott sighting

Yes, I stated something in the beginning and answered to people's questions and responses.
It's ok to be critical of coaches and decisions and still be supportive at the same time. I would hope a lot of fans feel that way too.

I can sit and watch film and edit film for hours on end. I'd love to have the time to be a video editor for the athletics department in some capacity but it doesn't pay well enough.

One thing I picked up on last time that I found really interesting...Watch the close outs(feet) on the shooters. If the gym was quiet you can hear(shoes will be squeaking) if they are closing out correctly. Basically, a bunch of small baby steps with their knees bent to prevent the pentration, but still challenge the shooter.

Quite frequently heard clearly at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

I am all for critical discussions of McD in threads that are aimed at being judgmental of McD's coaching. You started a critical McD discussion in a thread about McD eating in Milwaukee, hence the backlash, and then claimed were just answering posters' questions.

OK, very reasonable, but I would say a lot of people on here might be a little too up tight also with looking at things objectionably. I can get back giving my opinions in the official McD threads but people will be just as angry for bringing it up too. I never said he was a bad coach, person, or not liking him. I just believe in my opinions and the results we have seen, not optimism without a season starting for another 4 months.

Wow...this is some type of evidence that McDermott is a great teacher of the game? Please...this is HS fundamental stuff.

What I really find interesting is that some of the reasons being given for our struggles during McDermott's three years are that our players lack athleticism and / or they are failing to execute the game plan (ie: it's the player's fault). But, apparently, McDermott gets all the credit for Brackins being an all-conference player (ie: without GM made CB into the player he is).

You can't have it both ways.

Is it having it both ways? I do not know of any reasonable fan that expects a coach to turn most of the roster, walk-ons included, into all-conference players.
I also do not see how giving lack of athleticism as a reason for the struggles, and making Brackins into an all-conference player as being logically parallel. No one is suggesting he made Brackins more athletic.

I'm somewhat impartial to what you are saying as I somewhat agree/disagree.

I think we both can agree though that he doesn't throw plays under the bus like Alford could. Wow, that guy could teach a course on that.

Yeah you can. He's a big man's coach. McDermott can get the players an open shot, but if they miss it, there's nothing he can do about that. If you couldn't tell we are the least athletic team in the Big XII last season, I don't know what you were watching. Our X's and O's try to cover up our lack of athleticism. McDermott does get credit for that because look at Craig as a freshman, look at Craig as a sophomore, and tell me the differences. He's the same athlete he was, he's just
a) bigger
b) smarter
c) more fundamentally sound

You can't really teach bigger, but you can tell your players to get in the weight room. That's on Craig. You can teach smarter. Craig as a freshman was a terrible passer. Terrible. Now he's actually pretty good at throwing out of a double team. That's coaching. Fundamentally, Craig's work with his hands and feet is MUCH better than it was a year ago. That's on coaching.

jeez, sorry I brought it up. Maybe I should print this thread, go back in time, steal one of Ben Jacobson's nachos, and then ask Mac what he thinks.

Ladies and Gents, I'm saying it right now, if and it's a big if...... Diante can improve his outside set shot enough to pose a minor threat, this team will be playing in some form of post-season.

Diante showed last year he has the skill set to effectively manage a game, the only lacking piece was absolutely no threat of an outside shot. If he or another PG can step up and fill that void, good things will metriculate all over the floor offensively.

I agree, that much is obvious. The difference is how much of a difference McDermott made as opposed to another coach. We'll never know but I'm not convinced that ONLY McDermott could have helped Craig make that jump. The vast majority of coaches at the BCS conference level will get their players to improve over the course of their career. What will allow Mac to be successful is the ability to recruit better talent. We all hope that has been improved and Mac will continue to have success on the recruiting trail. Nothing is for sure yet but I for one am hopeful.

At this point, we shouldn't be surprised.

I am a firm believer that a thread about actor Dermot Mulroney would soon end up in a good coach/bad coach debate concerning Coach McDermott.

For the most part I think Mcdermott's in-game coaching has been really good.

He consistently puts together an excellent defensive gameplan. We have done a heckuva job defending during his tenure here relative to our talent level and experience. Our defense has kept us in games, and it should really be even better with the improved athleticism and rebounding we should get from the addition of Gilstrap and Dendy and the maturation of Ham and JVB and the guards.

Offensively, it is kinda tough to judge, since it is so hard to run an effective offense (or even get into an offensive set or run plays correctly) with inferior guard play. I would like to see more motion in our offense but I think alot of that has been a function of our guard play. We really moved well on offense and showed more motion against Colorado at home last year and had one of our better offensive games, which I think may have been as much about Colorado's poor defense than anything.

If I had one complaint as far as gameday coaching it would be handling of timeouts.... I'd like to see Mcdermott call them quicker when a team goes on a run rather than wait till they have rattled off 10 in a row.

Thanks for pointing that out...I realize basketball fundamentals can be taught at any level.

Maybe you could share some things you find interesting about basketball fundamentals. Maybe share some of your basketball credentials as well; thanks for the input in advance.

You act as though McDermott had no control over who has been on his roster over the last three years.

I can see the bottom line for people like you...if things go well it will be because of McDermott...and if things don't go well it will be the fault of the players, the referee, or whatever convenient excuse you can find.
