2026 crop year

Beans market up 45 cents & no one working at Corteva today, so couldn’t see seed beans. I would think with today’s technology, it would not be that hard to sell. We actually do it online.

Really enjoying this newfound thread.
Again, "don't know jack about farming."
Regarding Laura Farms, a whole lotta family members tune in, whether farmers or not, young-old.
The farmers ***** n moan, the kids enjoy.
End-all, she and Grant have given me a far deeper appreciation for farmers.

I like watching the Hilberts too. Brian’s Farming Videos is also great. It’s a family farm out in Ohio. They farm a lot of variable ground which is interesting to see how they manage it. I feel like a lot of farmers in Iowa take their soil for granted when it comes to farming.

What makes you say that?

Walked some seed yesterday in the hills of SW Wisco. The pics don’t really do the elevation change justice but it’s a gorgeous area.

For all the things our city neighbors think living rural do not offer, view is generally not one of them. Wife and I live atop a hill with a view of a neighboring town water tower 12 miles away on the horizon. This morning when the fog set in the view was like being in an airplane with clouds obscuring low lying areas. our friends from town always comment on our view as they are used to looking at their neighbors back door. I wouldn’t trade it for all the conveniences of city living

Slow to adopt cover crops, a lot of guys still do heavy tillage, and a lot of let’s throw all our fertilizer up front and expect it to be there all season.
I don’t do cover crops but all data (and even soil sampling) says I’m building organic matter in the soil. Most of my fertilizer is upfront in the form of manure. I have notice huge difference in soil tilth and health when I went to manure versus commercial fertilizer. I do add N as needed through the year though, I’m not 100% N from manure.

That’s great. Manure is a great fertilizer source.
My larger point about guys who farm a lot of challenging ground is they have to adopt different farming practices because they don’t have the quality soil to their benefit. Minimal/no till, cover crops, multiple passes of fertilizer, etc

NC Iowa is pretty flat and tight soils.

I walked quite a few fields this year looking at Chemical effectiveness. The one consistency I saw in the fields was heavy trash residue. The chemicals seemed to be soaked up by the trash and didn’t get soil contact. All the fields were strip tilled or no tilled.

I have been playing with cover crops some. I fly rye grass on standing corn, hoping to see some growth in the fall? Hopefully that happens this fall. The rye comes up in the spring we plant beans and kill the rye. I use chicken litter and don’t buy much dry, unless I need it. I agree with BCClone my OM is going up and so are my yields. I do like notill drilling 15” beans. We will see, I am not 100% sure CC’s are the fantastic things we are told.

Seen this with heavy residue and cover crops. UW has an awesome program going right now where they are studying effectiveness of herbicides in heavy residue. Rodrigo Werle at UW is an excellent weed scientist

Before we bought our own Semi’s, I contracted with a grain hauler who was capable of filling our contracts with National Starch in KC, Terminals in Atchison, Kn & St Joe, Mo. He had a lifetime of knowledge of delivering corn over a vast area. He stated to me many times that corn raised on farms that used a hog manure program consistently had a heavier test weight.
