***Official 2026 World Cup Thread***

Think Oscar Wilde when he said, 'every saint has a past, every sinner has a future.' But also think Neil Young. 'The fork in the road, light a candle'. Instead of cursing the darkness, let's light a candle for where we're going. This was fantastic for the world. We are better people for having been here. It was absolutely incredible. I'm inspired. I don't know when I'll ever sleep again.

I don't think Colombia can win the cup... but they're going to be scary for whomever is in their path.
This game should be at least 2x0 by now, but Colombia is not capitalizing on it. It might come back to hunt them with how crazy these WC games have been.

When I posted that, the had that fantastic goal that was just offside. And as I'm posting this, they had that one fantastic rip that just went over the crossbar. So yes, this should be 2-0 or even 3-0 by now... but their defense has done the job and have made the 1-0 look like a gigantic wall to climb.

Bummed for Ghana. I have a student in my office from Ghana. The Ghanaian government gives tickets via a lottery to Ghanaians in the US but sometimes not until two hours before game time. He and some buddies drove to Philly on the chance they would get tickets. They did and they got to see the previous game. He said it was the first time in 20 years he got to watch his national team and you can see the pride on his face. Well, he got tickets to tonight’s game too but another loss. Bummed for him.

Because why shouldn’t you root for the storyline. Let’s root for the football giant who’s won multiple world cups instead of the tiny island nation playing their first World Cup.
Yeah, cheering for Argentina against Cape Verde is like cheering for Duke to beat the 16 seed in the NCAA tourney.

I cheered for Argentina as I am a Messi fan and I’m not ready to see his international career end. Hope they win it all again.

France and Argentina with very favorable paths to the semifinals, but surprises can always happen.

France has Spain along their path. Not sure that would be favorable. Spain was even with France going into this and have yet to concede a goal.

The semifinals are setting up to be a monster. It’ll be interesting to see the domestic TV numbers once the US is eliminated. Having semi finals of Brazil vs Argentina and Spain vs France will be an incredible TV draw. The question is just how well it does domestically.
