Big XII options for sanctioning Texas Tech

The other party(s) that needs to be heard from in all this is the media partners. Are Fox/ESPN willing to broadcast games where the validity of the outcome could be in question because Sorsby is on the field? Are they willing to allow the league to remove any inventory involving Tech?

The TV partners can easily add weight behind either the Tech camp or the other league members, because at the end of the day, the money talks.

This is the future of college athletics if conference separate and self-govern

At least in this case, it’s not very divisive.

What happens in P2 when elites are on one side and filler on the other? Hard to see conferences surviving as-is when they’re the bad guy

It won’t be in question because of Sorsby maybe having bets.

It’s all the other players across the country that don’t have the spotlight, and now think there’s less to lose from betting on their games

Keeping Sorsby off the field isn’t primarily about keeping Sorsby from fixing games.

This is about deterrence

While I’m pissed at the verdict, Am I the only one not seeing why Tech needs to be punished? Sorsby sued the NCAA on his own accord. The legal system has spoken. Tech’s job is to win games within the confines of the system. They’re just doing their job.

Not to mention, that none of the gambling issues happened under Tech’s watch. I just don’t see why they should be culpable for anything.

It’d also probably be shortsighted for the conference if they destroyed what’s become a flagship brand, and the team with best chance to make a playoff run. Cracking down on it may be cutting your nose to spite your face.

Where am I wrong on this?

The perfect offramp for the conference would be for Sorsby to be charged for the crimes he's admitted to committing thus likely giving Tech an out to not paying him.

Now for the actual question:

  1. boot them from the conference. Lose-Lose the Big 12 now gets even less money and Tech is independent maybe to be picked up by the ACC.
  2. Remove them from the conference standings in football. W-L % for standings for the rest of the teams.
  3. Most likely option: Do nothing but ask Tech not to play him.

My biggest concern is if a court shoots down any conference sanctions or penalties, it means that the sport has no governance.

The conference has to suspend him. If TTU or Sorsby wants to sue again then fine.
Make them continue to say Sorsby is so fragile that we have to throw away more than a 100 years of cases where athletes betting on their own sport and teams is completely wrong and detrimental to the sport.

Even though you can do something, there may be very compelling moral and ethical reasons and benefits to not do that thing.

I believe the conference could pass a bylaw effective immediately that makes it declarative that playing a player deemed ineligible by the NCAA for gambling infractions means the conference can vote to forfeit any wins by the team that allows them to play.

We are in new uncharted territory and a bylaw like this needs to be in place. That would at least give Tech something to think about while this plays out in court.

Do we make more money if Tech gets to the playoff? Plus we don’t have to play them. If the NCAA or the Big 12 can’t do anything about it then why should I care. I hope they win the national title. More money for us.

Obviously I’m saying this tongue in cheek but at this point whatever. If tech would happen to go through a few SEC and Big ten teams on their way to a title you can bet things will get changed in a hurry

Tech is guilty of either not having thorough enough due-diligence or willingly recruiting/paying a player who has bet on games where that player is a participant.

That being said, neither Cincinnati nor Indiana should get a pass here either. Obviously the Big12 has no say with Indiana, but Cincinnati needs to see some repercussions here too.

If they play him, they’ll be punished. Now or in the future

Tech isn’t a make or break brand

You have to think long term. College athletics is the WWE if players are able to bet on their games

Granted, this is only an injunction, and Sorsby playing until the case is settled doesn’t mean it will be green-lighted

But would it have even gotten that far? It didn't at Iowa State and Iowa. Based on past experience, I think almost anywhere else they would have just cut the guy and moved on

I think the difference is that you have a court injunction allowing the Tech player to play. The Big 10 and SEC would totally use that as an excuse to have a start player play by throwing their hands up in the air and saying their is nothing they can do.

If they want to get paid like the pros, they need to be ruled upon like the pros. Each sport needs a commissioner and each sport needs a CBA.
First they need employment status.

School leadership needs to give up the notion this fits into amateurism anymore
