Outside of a flame thrower, what's the most effective solution against these bastards when I'm trying to enjoy being on my deck?

Vanilla and cinnamon help keep them off you. Those citronella candles work well for small areas. Otherwise spray the bushes and tall grass areas to kill them off.

Mosquitos suck! I'm all for the flamethrower idea.

With that being said, I rarely see mosquitos here in New Mexico, but definitely remember how bad they were in Iowa. My hometown had a little truck that would drive around and spray something to kill them but I don't think it helped all that much. Now I'm curious if any other towns had that.

Had those in the town I used to live in. You could hear them when they drove by.

And we wonder why Iowa has such high cancer rates.

But in that note, Deet. If it doesn’t burn your skin, you don’t have a high enough percentage.

They still run them, usually a couple a times a summer maybe a little more in low lying areas. (also depends on the budget)

Bought one of these years ago at the old Dutchman's store in Cantril. Not sure the new megamart location has them. Works like a charm.

I see they ripped off "Caribou" Jack DeLouac's Skeeter trap patent.

He lived off the land for years illegally in the Boundary Waters, mostly along Basswood Lake. His aluminum traps were highly regarded for catching those two-pound skeeters—or, as he'd call them in his gruff Ojibwa-French accent, "Mus Kwatus," which are rare now even in northeast Minnesota.

Jack and Mrs. DeLouac, best called Shebear, worked together to fashion traps from scrap metal and barter them after pelt values crashed in 1987. The metal came from Jack's secret recovery of a crashed Air Force F-89C Scorpion interceptor jet piloted by Lt. Felix Moncla Jr., which disappeared over Lake Superior in 1953 while chasing a UFO. Jack never reported the find. It was thought Moncla parachuted into Canada, where he settled down, raised seven kids, coached peewee hockey, and spent his later years fighting invasive wild boar.

The last record of Jack shows him venturing into Ely to buy flapjack mix, nails, and a new teddy for Shebear. He's likely still portaging his handmade birch canoe south of Agnes Lake, hunting for the monster lake trout "Matilda" or battling black bears over spawning sturgeon.

You could try the Bucket of Doom. There are mixed reviews, but it's a lot better than fogging/spraying, which will kill a lot of insects, including other pollinators and beneficial species.

I do this and bought a cheap fogger that seems to help some. I generally just do the fogger before bigger gatherings.
