Milan Momcilovic withdraws from the 2026 NBA Draft

I'm thin skinned because I don't appreciate athletes that chase money? If that is the case then I am proud to be thin skinned.

And they aren't "our" players if they aren't playing for ISU

Why every other person chases money in their profession. If someone offered you the same job as you are doing now but they will quadruple your pay, You are gonna stay at your current job? Everything else is the same, they are just going to give you 4 times the amount you currently make, you will stay with your current company? Why? out of loyalty? How loyal are they to you, are they willing to give you that type of money? No? Why because they don't believe that is your value is the answer. Someone else believes you hold a higher value, so you take that job, or you become the moron staring at someone elses lake home because they were smart enough to take the huge pay increase. I love Iowa State and have for my whole life. However, if Kentucky offers me 7 million to be a fan, You better believe I am showing up wearing Kentucky blue. Iowa State can still be the team my heart follows.

A break-up is a break-up. When it happens because she’s flirting with someone else, it feels awful. When that fails and she needs $5 million to come back to you, even worse.

The above shows why the girlfriend analogy everyone is using here is genuinely dumb- reality has more nuance and different considerations.
All analogies fail, when pushed far enough.

I mean he is right in that aspect though.

I find it perfectly understandable that Milan left, but I'm also not going to cheer for him anywhere else. I cheer for Iowa State. If a player transfers, for whatever reason, most fans are not going to continue being a fan of them, and it's honestly weird that some people seem to think that should change because they are now getting paid to transfer

I laugh because nobody is saying you still need to be a fan and cheer for them. Those are all poorly formed opinions by the hurt feelers fans. Just because fans like myself say that we understand why they left doesn't mean we are rooting for them.

It's funny you mention that because that isn't me. I could make a lot more money being a partner at a CPA firm than I do working for myself. But working for myself allows me the flexibility I want. Also, I could make more money working for myself if I charged "market rates" for my services, but I can't justify those rates. For example if a tax return takes me 30 minutes I can't justify charging $300 for it like most others would.

There are many more important things than chasing $$$.

While I appreciate the overall point, in general the “same job” is only possible in theory.

There is a lot more that goes into/along with a job than just pay and on-paper responsibilities.

Milan is going to be working with different management, different teammates, and an entirely different clientele. There will likely be different hours. He has to relocate.

Hell, it may be a better role for him…but it isn’t exactly the same.

Regardless, for $5-7M for a year it is probably worth it even if the job sucks.

You are comparing two different things. I am comparing the exact same thing. If everything were exactly the same job you have now. There is no difference.

Wait, so you are doing what's best for you?

I think the biggest takeaway for me in all of this is that every person has a finite amount of time and energy to give. Some people have a lot to give, others are spread more thin. But things change when that time/energy investment no longer reciprocates joy - this is something that college sports administrators need to realize before it's too late.

What I'm saying is that I have enough time/energy to support active Iowa State teams. I have consistently and religiously followed Iowa State for 25+ years - I have walked the walk (so to say) flying to basketball tournaments, bowl games, even flying into town for dumb equipment sales. I have enough time/energy to FERVENTLY support players that left Iowa State due to exhaustion of eligibility or going professional - most recently Haliburton, Breece, Georges, Brock, Lazard. They brought me joy at Iowa State and earned my continued long-term energy investment.

However, what I do NOT have the time for is anyone who willingly chooses to leave for another school. It could be for $0 or $1 billion dollars - I don't care the reason. I willingly choose to give my time and energy to an institution under the presumption that we (players and fans) are all in this together - that is what makes college athletics so pure. But when someone chooses to transfer (especially if they were already thriving as a player and team) it becomes clear that they were never part of that something bigger, and it was a waste of my limited time/energy. So to me, Milan is now just a name in a record book and a city in Italy. Nothing more.

I'll give a good example (of a not good person) to explain my thoughts on Milan/Audi/Rocco/etc.

College sports are practically pro sports now with the "free agency" transfer portal.

I'm a Kansas City Chiefs fan. After Tyreek Hill wanted out and was traded to the Miami Dolphins, I didn't pay attention to him. Didn't cheer for his downfall, but didn't want him to have great success either.

That's how I will treat players who leave ISU going forward.

I wish Milan would remain a Cyclone, but I understand and accept the circumstances. I will follow how he does next year and I hope he does well.

I also have no problem with isufbcurt feeling the way he does and expressing it.

Chasing money? How about setting yourself up for financial security at age 21 for the rest of your life.

This money is not going to last - there is no ROI........take the money while it is still there.

To quote the late Herb Brooks

"The name on the front of the jersey is a hell a lot more important than the one on the back"
That just doesn't work for me. Yes, cheer for the front. But I can't blindly cheer for ANYTHING - be it sports, politics, etc. It needs to be humanized and I need to know/care about the individuals - their stories and seeing growth and development over the years. Jake Knott, AJ Klein, Naz Long, Matt Thomas, Joel Lanning, Will McDonald, Georges Niang. These underdog players/stories play a huge role in what drives my Iowa State passion - and the newfound lack of these stories kills much of it for me. If people just blindly cheer for the team without any further mental investment (consciously or subconsciously), then maybe we are getting what we deserve with rosters full of nameless mercenaries.

Without some kind of continuity and tangible development, the whole college sports environment turns into minor leagues where no one really know who's on the team and you are more there for the food/vibes than the actual game.
