High School Sports Thread

Depends, would the state board allow DCG to leave the LHC if it drops the conference to 6 schools? CIML doesn't "need" to expand.
Good question. It seems though it’s just a matter of “when” for the schools that continue to see big enrollment jumps.

I don’t know. Other than Urbandale, DCG and Norwalk are going to be way smaller than the other CIML schools, many of which are also growing.

DCG and Norwalk are in the 800s. Dowling is about 1100 and the rest are 1400-2100. Maybe they get closer but it’s going to be a while.

NP and BF are growing fast, but they are considerably smaller than DCG and Norwalk.

DCG is probably the only school close in enrollment, growth rate and competitive success to consider the CIML.

For central Iowa big/growing schools I think there are three general groups that would be consistently competitive.
- Current CIML less Urbandale
- the 5 DM Metros plus Marshalltown, FD
- Urbandale, Ames, DCG, Norwalk, Indianola

Others to fill out the bottom two groups would be Ottumwa, Newton, B-F, NP. NP is quite a bit smaller but growing fast and seems to have good sports.

Right, and of course overall teams are better as you go up in classes. But it isn’t like if you’re getting blown out in one class you’re going to drop down and suddenly be good. It isn’t THAT big of a difference.

Bad 4A teams would get smoked by the top Class A teams. Bad teams are bad teams. I remember class A Ogden destroying Perry a couple of years ago and Ogden wasn't even a good class A team. So yeah, moving from 5 to 4 or 3 to 2 because you suck won't change a thing.

The 8 man level can make a big difference. I remember Rockford having to move up to A for a couple years and they won like one total game and was going to beat down city routinely. They dropped to 8 and was at least in the semis If not the finals the first year.

I could see this. There are definitely going to be some teams that have good players but struggle to put a competitive 11 out there, especially OL. Plus in 8 man and A the impact of a good class of players can be huge.

Yeah, Rockford was quite bad for a long time. In the 2000s they were 1A. Then played in A for awhile before dropping to 8 man. They must have had a big class as they had to go back so class A for a cycle. They weren't great when playing 8 man but could win occasionally. They didn't win a game in their 2 years playing class A.

When they dropped back to 8 man they got a new coach who was able to convince their best cross country runner, a senior, to be the QB.They were runner up that year. They beat Don Bosco in the quarter finals who had beaten them by something like 60 points earlier in the year. Granted Don boscos best player had gotten injured the week prior.

They made it back to the playoffs the following year showing it wasn't a total fluke. After that year the coach took a job at osage (I don't think he is still there) and the football team struggled from that point. I don't think they have a team any more.

I think that's how it went down anyway.

Committee also recommended Waverly-Shell Rock join the wamac, 12-0 vote.

The conference has been fighting against WSR for awhile.

I have never seen a high school with as poor sportsmanship as WSR.....and many in my part of the state agree which is why we have been fighting for years to keep them out of our conference

That's because there are one maybe two good teams in 8 man. And those good teams really should be in Class A.

Hope not. Very dangerous in football. Big difference between 8th and 9th grade boys. If you need 8th graders to fill out a football roster you should probably think about consolidating.
I believe this is a done deal once the governor signs the HS athletics bill. I believe most coaches are responsible people and will not be putting 8th graders in dangerous positions. I think it’s overall a positive development.

Most coaches might be a responsible person...but not all are! A 13 year old matching up against an 18 year old? I don't think that is something that is needed...

If an 8th grader is on the field on a Friday night with 17/18 year olds that is not a good thing. So what if a 14 year old gets absolutely de-cleated by an 18 year old and ends up in an ambulance? As long as BFE and Po Dunk Highs don't have to consolidate.

I really don’t think this will occur. At most this would fill out some jv rosters at class A sized schools.

Coaches aren’t looking to get kids hurt.

Anyone know where to get results out of the 4A state track qualifying meet in Dubuque tonight?
