**** Official 2026 MBB Spring Transfer Portal Thread ****

If we're being honest though, does that matter when you get to the elite 8?
Yes.

If you’re not one of the 8 best teams in your conference…you’re a fraud who got lucky to be in the final 8 of the tournament.

Clearly Florida was already thinking about which strip club they would go to after the game. Even then they only lost by one.

Looking at the Box Scores…that game is a complete conundrum. Tied for rebounds, FL had one more turn over. FL shot better from 3, and the FT line with more FT attempts, and only 1% less on 2’s …and Iowa somehow got off more shots.

Iowa pulls things like this out of their ass somehow.

I agree and I hate Iowa as much as the next guy, but we'd kill for an elite 8 right now and would say "who cares!" if we were the last big 12 team to make the tourney and finished the regulars season in the middle of the conference.

I think it's an interesting debate - Would you rather your team win 30+ games and miss out on an elite 8/final 4, or be a play-in game and make it to the final 4?

Was Texas's season more successful than Florida's?
I'd love an Elite 8. But I'm not going to pretend the rest of the season doesn't matter. If it did, no one would bother watching games until the NCAA tournament. But we all watch the regular season games.

At the end of the day, how far you go in the NCAA tournament only matters to the fanbase of that team. Try to name the Elite 8 teams from last year off the top of your head. It's a blast to go on a run like that. No one else cares though.

I agree, the NCAA tournament is extremely important. It can change the perception of a season.

My point is I think that's really dumb. We all accept that crazy things happen in the tournament. That's why we love it. It's called March Madness for a reason. So why would we place the value of an entire season on 2-3 games played there? That's dumb.

I'd argue the majority of fans, and the entire media, place too much emphasis on NCAA tournament results. "All that matters is what you do in the tournament". I call ********. People that say that don't even believe it, or they wouldn't watch games all season long, or care about their outcomes. That massive win against Houston at home? People are going to tell me that didn't matter? ********. Rivalry games against Iowa and KU? Yawn.....

Try to remember how teams placed in each conference? NCAA Tournament leaves a greater impression on people than the regular season.

I don't think either of those leave a lasting impression.

If Arizona had lost in the 2nd round this year, I still would have remembered them as being the best team in the Big 12. I don't think fans of SEC teams will look back at a mediocre Texas squad and think they were good this year.

"The Portal Report" (@theportalreport on Instagram) reports that Mason Williams has received interest from the following schools:

Washington
SU [Syracuse?]
Gonzaga
NMST
Portland
Boston College
Sam Houston State
Not even good enough to have interest from San Diego? Why did TJ miss so bad on transfers last year? The returners along with Blake take too much of the budget?

Miss so bad? Nelson wasn't quite able to break through but that was more due to the freshmen being ready from day 1, Williams had a serious injury, Mulder was for depth but Pleta took his time and Buchanan was a great pickup.

I wouldn't go so far as "who cares", but I think if you consistently win a lot of games (higher seed), in the long run you will have a better chance of breakthrough of winning it all.

The only thing people remember about the tourney normally is the winner and the odd team that made a good run like Loyola Chicago. I mean let's name the elite 8 from last season without looking. It's impossible. Generally you remember that your team made a certain mark but I can't remember how other teams did the year before.

The tournament can't be everything in some scenarios and mean nothing in others.

Gotta be consistent with that one
Depends on the context

An injury to a player like Jefferson means it can be everything on one hand, while also not being the end-all on adjudication of comparing seasons

This year is a better season than 2021-22 even if that team reached the elite eight

But I’d also trade Jefferson being healthy in the tournament for a lower finish in the regular season this year

It's common to use tournament success as a measure of program success. That can affect media coverage, recruiting, etc.

No offense to him…wonder how much of that is based off pre-op game?

Gonzaga would be a high level offer…

Seems odd that SD and UNI are off the list.

Maybe because he’s hoping for P5 / Gonzaga exposure?

I agree it was TJ's weakest transfer class so far. Current class looks great though!

I didn’t used to be a bb coach. I’m not one now, but I didn’t used to be either. But Florida’s game plan in that game was insanely bad. They had a huge size advantage down low. How do you take advantage of that? Have your seven footers out shooting threes, which they’ve never been good at. And don’t get me started on the last play - down one with 4.8 to play and they can’t foul you so you let them push you towards the sideline and you don’t get a shot. Arghhh…
