Williams & Blum: Is Iowa State’s 2026-27 basketball roster final?

I think had Mason Williams been healthy last year, he for sure would have played, I think if Mulder ended up being more like BRE, he would have played more, and I think Nelson who could have played more too, if he were B12 material - which would have given us an 11 man rotation. With as tough as our guys play on the defensive end, i think if TJ has 11 guys he could play and they produce, he will
At no point were we ever going to have an 11 man rotation. It just doesn't work out that way.

I disagree with Blum. I think Williams looks like a villain in a Jackie Chan movie. :jimlad:

** Who are the 2-3 additional players to see playing time?????

TJ pretty consistanly uses an 8 Man rotation-
Singleton PF
Johnson PG
Bateman SG
Toure PG
Pleta C
Buchanan C

6 are pretty set.

Singleton won't become Jefferson overnight. And we were missing a backup 4 anyway. Manning will get some minutes, at least early on. That lineup is also missing a SF, one or both of Bond/Prather will get time.

Blum pointed out that all 5 of the guys we brought in are 75% from the line or better.
I'm excited about the skill level of the guys we're bringing in. Johnson, Prather, and Bond are all good outside shooters with volume. The concern is who is creating looks for them? Johnson seems like a creator. Toure has some ability. Batemon isn't really a passer lol. As always, we need dynamic creators, and I think we whiffed a little in that regard with these commits.

Every year we are convinced that we have so much depth, and every year by the time we get to league play we always find out we only have 7-8 guys who can really contribute in a B12 game and find ourselves wishing we had more. There will be injuries, freshman who aren't ready, or transfers who don't do well with the step up in competition. It will all sort itself out. It always does.
Yep....the yearly reminder....and i think especially in the way things are now, it is also likely we may not ever see some of the freshmen get meaningful time, likely potential there....but do they get to do it here or elsewhere as transfers are to play now.

I am also very confident that the players coming in (HS or transfer) all have a very clear understanding from the coaches on what their role is/can be.

I need to watch Johnson some more but I'm excited to see if he can be one of those short PGs that has the quickness and handle to consistently get in the paint and can create from there by getting a defense to collapse or rotate

Thought the comment that we landed all five of these guys in one visit because of long term relationships was telling. Realize that tampering is not really enforced, but it seems like that might be the case if you indeed signed these guys because of so called ‘relationships.’ Or is the communication taking place only on the agent level?

The other transfers will likely all play -

Manning as the backup PF
Prather and Bond as the Milan/Heise type wings

That's 9 - which is probably the starting point. Then it's a question of whether the freshman or Mitchell force their way into the rotation.

Prather, Bond, Wiggins, Manning. TJ's not going to bring in a transfer and not play them, if they can play at the Big12 Level, and he's not going to let a freshman sit who could contribute either. If everyone stays healthy next year, we could see 10-11 guys playing consistent mins

Seems like instead of spending money on a 1-2 big name transfers, we just spread it across 5 mid tier and are hoping a couple of them pan out.
Singleton was an exception but I agree that the approach this cycle with reaching on the 3 MM guys (especially the 5-9 Johnson and unathletic Prather) is puzzling. Depth doesn't mean diddly if 2 or 3 of them are High Major busts.

Ummm ... yes he does? Someone unexpected isn't going to get minutes, likely more than one. Once TJ decides your scrub mins you might as well start packing.

Wow, that's quite a take.

By whatever measure you want to make, I fail to see how those guys - especially those two - are considered "reaches". Especially when they are TJ's first choice.

Prather led the country in assist to turnover ratio so clearly he can dish it. I think he plays a lot. Someone’s going to have put the ball in the hoop.
Prather might not be as battle tested. Robert Morris only played one P5 (ACC, Big 12, SEC, Big 10, Big East) school the entire year. And that one team was Iowa back in early November. He has very little experience going up against Big 12 caliber athletes.

I hear you but I mean the team out east took a guy from Robert Morris last year and he was mostly serviceable for them in the B1G. Robert Morris was a pretty decent team last year too.
