No More Sweet 16’s in Chicago

These last few years have resigned me to the belief that I will never live to see a football conference title or a bball final four. We have had several good chances and just can't break through. Feels like the program is legit cursed.
I would love to see an Elite 8 appearance just once more. 2000 was already over 25 years ago…had that damned game in the bag too….

As of March 27, 2026, Iowa State (ISU) men's basketball has not won a game at the United Center in Chicago, holding an 0-4 all-time record at the venue.

  • 2010: Lost to Duke (86-65).
  • 2016: Lost to Virginia in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
  • 2022: Lost in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
  • 2026: Lost to Tennessee (76-62) in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16
I was there in 2010 for that regular season ISU/DUKE game. McDermott coaching, Otz assistant...Gilstrap was our best player that night. Brackins & Garrett just meh games by their standards...

Lucca Staiger was absolutely useless against them. 2 weeks after the game he quit on the team mid-season to go play Euro pro ball. Unbelievable move at the time.

Jon Scheyer destroyed us along with Singler, Smith, & Plumlee.

United Center is definitely a house of horrors for ISU.

I checked the box score, Scheyer scored 31, 10-of-19 FG (4-of-9 from 3), 7-of-7 free throws.

I wonder what happened to that guy, like, where is he now? :D

There's no such thing as curses in sports. Its something fans of certain teams create in their head to explain losing to better teams. End of story. Its an excuse to be a loser and shouldn't be tolerated.

You are putting a lot of words in my mouth.

Reread my post, I never said curse or that I even believe in curses.

I said Chicago has been a "House of Horrors" meaning when you look at performances in Omaha/KC/STL/Denver/etc. we've had much better success at those neutral sites. ISU, opponent aside, has not played to their potential in any game in the United Center (for whatever basketball related reason). Never said it was because of a curse.

Next year has Minneapolis and Omaha as first weekend sites and Kansas City hosting the Midwest regional. Everyone get their hopes up now.
I thought STL was AWESOME. Weather was great, stadium access was easy. Enterprise Center is nice and cool inside (I knew it was for hockey, but they crank up the A/C at all times.)

I went to Omaha in 2024. Arena is an alright venue. I would certainly go back there, but KC and Sprint/T-Mobile or whatever it is called will always be my favorite. Close drive and P&L.

Let's hope ISU can get a 1 or 2 seed and play close to home again. Hilton traveling crowds will always be best in MN, Omaha, & KC. STL & CHI will always be 2nd choices for me just do to being close, but not "day trip" proximity.

The loss to Duke was to the eventual National Champion & we had a dysfunctional team with a coach who was still trying to figure out how to lead a P5 team. The loss to Virginia was with Prohm as our coach and the Cavaliers were the HIGHER seed that year. This year we did NOT have our best player. I totally believe we beat UT with JJeff and finally breat the S16 "curse." I am fine if we play another S16 in Chicago - I just hope like crazy it will be at a time when we are FULLY healthy and the higher seed.

Wearing my Chilton Magic shirt in anticipation of going to Omaha's CHI Center next year.
