Yes because coaching caused Josh to roll his ankle on a routine layup…Coaching
Being 4.5 point favorites in a Sweet 16, losing by double digits, while Iowa is in the elite 8, is easily the most disappointing ISU game in history. The only other comparables would be the 2000 and 2001 tourney losses.
Being obtuse and ignoring the circumstances surrounding this loss doesn't change the circumstances. I've been around for 4 decades of nut punches....this was the worst in memory. What does Iowa have to do with this loss?
Ejim type, not the next Ejim. Not just you, but I've seen a few posts like this, wanting an "Ejim type" player. Did we forget he was Big 12 POY? He would have been the best player on this year's team, and probably every year, except maybe senior Niang. And even Niang was not POY in the big 12.
Barnes totally outcoached Otzelberger! UNC never had any interest at all.Coaching
I agree. I think even with Jefferson we still might have lost. At the same time, I don’t see them as a championship team, whereas I feel we could have been contenders if fully healthy. It feels a little contradictory, lol.Its tough because the loss of Jefferson hurt without question. Taking the Clones from a top 8ish team to realistically a top 12-20ish team.
I'm a big believer that NCAA Tournament matchups are huge for a lot of teams. Sure every year there are some bullet proof teams like Duke, Michigan and Arizona appear to be this year. They have a lot of roster flexibility. But for the other 60 something teams there is a matchup kryptonite. And Tennessee was such a team for Iowa State, maybe even if we had Jefferson.
We have had really solid teams over the last 5 years, but there's always something missing from a roster composition perspective. So the challenge for TJ is to build a roster that is bullet proof or as bullet proof as a program with Iowa State's financial resources can be.
Not every team is able to defend like Tennessee thoEven if MM comes back next year, every team is going to defend him exactly the same way they have this year. Our coaches have to figure out a way to get him open shots, MM has to figure out how to create his own offense, or (especially as tonight has shown), we need to figure out a 4-on-4 offense that has MM stand at half court and hope his defender is stupid enough to go inside and help.
MM has done an amazing job with what he's been given this year, but I can't imagine him in an NBA offense where he has other players around him that can shoot, create, and use him to open up the floor. I don't want to lose him for next year, but his NBA potential is FAR greater than what we're seeing at the college level.
People can dump on his defense all they want, but if he can shoot like he does now in the NBA, he can be a valuable asset to any team. Georges Niang is a similar comparison, but MM's potential ceiling is higher in the NBA.
I agree, and I’m more than ready to see a team get over the hump. I would also argue that we’ve only recently been a ‘consistent’ S16 team. While that is nice, at some point you have to break through that glass ceiling. If you’re capable of getting to the Sweet 16 that frequently, why not one Elite 8 appearance at least?
Without JJ, to get to the E8 was a monumental uphill battle. I don’t care what Vegas said the spread was. With Tennessee’s size, I knew ISU would probably lose this game. At the end of the day, no way we get by Michigan without JJ. This doesn’t even come close to the 2001 Hampton game or even Fred’s first round loss his last season.Being 4.5 point favorites in a Sweet 16, losing by double digits, while Iowa is in the elite 8, is easily the most disappointing ISU game in history. There’s a reason the spread shrank to -2.5 by tip. We needed to turn them over 20+ times and shoot it well to have a chance and make up for the rebounding. Tennessee was the better team with JJeff out.Being 4.5 point favorites in a Sweet 16, losing by double digits, while Iowa is in the elite 8, is easily the most disappointing ISU game in history. 14’ Niang foot team still had a very legit shot at E8. They just couldn’t hit free throws. That season will always remain the biggest ‘what if’ outside of 2000.Going back to 2014 that's 5 straight losses in the Sweet Sixteen and we weren't particularly close to winning any of them.
At least getting there more often will increase the chances of winning one but the wait has become frustrating.
I’m 55 and have been waiting 44 years since listening to Pete and Eric before the Hornacek days. Also a Vikings fan so there’s that. When we break the injury curse and get to the Elite 8 or farther, I believe it will be with TJ.
Imo what hurt ISU the most this year was Nelson not panning out. He would have made the backcourt as good as any in the country.
I think most are waiting on their first pubes, so I am disregarding their takes. This thread is an embarrassment. A lot of pussies in our fan base.
Nobody has said anything about them being a bad matchup for everyone. For ISU 100% bad. Without JJ there was 3 players over 6’5, and two of those should never be on the court at the same time. How did Tennessee even lose a game this year if they are as big of a matchup nightmare for everyone as you say? They must be the best #6 seed that ever walked the earth. We still had 2 big-time players including our senior PG and a really good supporting cast and they mopped the floor with us. I'm more disappointed in how bad we were manhandled more than just losing the game in general. I thought this program was in a better spot in terms of talent and depth honestly. And Im not sure Jefferson playing would have made much difference. We couldn't hit free throws, and frankly looked lost out there offensively.
