*** Official #23 Tennessee vs #6 IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

All I want is to experience an Elite 8 and actually remember it....I wasn't even a year old when the 99-2000 team made it but obviously I have no memory of that.

I hear you, but I'll let you know that my memory of that Elite 8 game was much, much worse than tonight. LIke 1,000 times worse. We advanced and were there, but as a fan that game was gut wrenching to watch.

Do…do you actually think Nelson would’ve saved the day replacing a 6’9 All American if he’d played more against Oklahoma State and Colorado? That may be the wildest thing I’ve seen all night
Not what I said. Of course a bench guy isn’t going to match what a starter gave you - otherwise they wouldn’t be in the bench. But when things like injuries happen, it would be nice to have some guys who can step up and contribute.

Same as last year when Milan and Keshon were out. You are putting in guys who hadn’t played in weeks or months. That is a big ask. Why not work them in for 4-5 minutes of blowouts? Plus it saves the legs of your starters. What is the harm? But TJ did not do that.

I mean look, it was a hell if a team with a few flaws, which all teams have. We lost our best player who happens to 6'8, prob weighs 260 and can run like a deer. It was going to be an uphill climb after that.

One thing that’s been a repeating issue for us has been the lack of length and athleticism we’ve had.

It showed up tonight, against IL, as well as other teams in the B12.

Seems like we get a lot of dogs who can ball, but they’re always smaller / less athletic guys.
Tell me how the F could Awaka leave UT for AZ & then UT still has all these bigs?

Yep.

I specially knowing MSU cruised to a NC after that dog fight.

God may not hate us…but He’s clearly not a fan either.

TJ doesn’t have a killer instinct otherwise we’d at least advance once. Tell me I’m wrong
Yes, you were wrong. You claimed TJ only had a killer instinct against teams like Prairie View A&M. I gave you just a couple of examples where there he had a killer instinct.

I can understand that and with every advancement of the tournament, the wins are more euphoric and the losses are more painful.

Texas Tech fans still have PTSD from their natty loss to UVA.

Why are you acting like TJ has never won big games before?
Win post season games, to be fair I think it largely falls on Nate Schmidt being a horrendous coach offensively. Once TJ gets rid of him this team will take the next level but until then there’s a serious handicap in place

Guess the only thing that equates to "killer instinct" is an Elite 8. Which is remarkable logic.

Go back and watch the few games where there was motion and the ball was moving. It was like a well oiled machine with all the cutting and spacing etc. it was fun to watch and it oped up so many opportunities to score.

This hand off at the top of the key and just going side to side is too easy to defend. Sure we won games this way but it was a struggle against good teams. I never understood way this was 99% of the offense.

Nate needs to go, he’s a losing coach who isn’t a massive handicap to this program. No serious fan should support Nate being in charge of our offense
Yep. Our half court offense is what is holding us back.

I was watching the game tonight with a friend who was a coach at the D2 level. He kept pointing out how our players were standing around on offense, waiting for the dribble handoff. No movement.

If you look for it, it really stands out. Too often we are watching the ball. He was watching what the other floors guys were doing (or not doing).

We need an offense that can manufacture open looks against disciplined defenses that don’t fall for our typical high screen or dribble hand off into iso-ball.

Seriously though, any fans giving these guys a hard time should be ashamed. They worked ten times harder than you've ever worked for anything in your lives. Sorry that your life is so empty that you have to rely on others for your sense of well being.

Always appreciate your posting here, @Cyclonepride, especially the above.

Iowa ran him off for "not taking the next step" & never recovered to a level equal to what Dr Tom had established. Having a run now, but remains to be seen in today's landscape if it will be an anomaly or not.

TJ is NOT an anomaly. He's a proven commodity, one who hasn't reached his ceiling. I'd much prefer he reach that ceiling (and make it the highest possible) right there from Ames. He'll continue to learn and improve every season. Wins & Losses may fluctuate as player movements will dictate that heavily, but I believe TJ will get ISU to multiple Final 4s.
I remember in TJ's first season in the Tourney, Huggins was a guest analyst on CBS, and he made the statement that TJ would get ISU to the Final Four eventually. A bold statement after only 1 season for sure, but Huggie knows hoops and I agree with him. Better times are ahead in hoops, as much as tonight sucked.
