High School Sports Thread

It's a little easier to have that kind of school spirit when you have two of the very best coaches in the state with Idle and Stone for25+ year career. Both are Iowa Hall of Famers and I think Idle still might be coaching there.
Last I had heard Idle was still teaching and coaching, but I have not talked to him for a couple of years. Both him and Stone retired and started drawing IPERS than they sat out the required 4 months and went right by to coaching and teaching. Stone sat out the last month of the school year so he could coach football that coming fall. Davis had a very nice career, was surprised he started doing the Varsity girls after so many year, but he loves coaching.

Yikes very little public school representation in the lower classes. Why on earth is Fort Dodge St. Edmonds in the 1A class? Think of the disparity in resources schools like West Bend-Mallard or Harris-Lake Park have compared to Ft Dodge.

It's a small school. Two years ago they graduated 30 kids and I heard this year around 35.

My dad was a St. Edmonds alum so I'm not a huge hater...but still they have been making it to state on a regular basis in mulitple sports. They clearly have an advantage.

And that all 4 teams in 1A and 2A are all private is a real problem.
The public high schools in Bellevue and Carroll both made the state tournament. I don't think the two private high schools in those towns are affecting the public high schools' boys' basketball teams. Heck, Carroll High and Bellevue High both won their games against the private schools in their respective towns. Also, in 1A, Bellevue Marquette upset the #3 seed, MMCRU.

Could care less about Carrol or Bellevue...its the other 1A and 2A schools competing around the state that don't have the money, the coaching staffs, the wealthier families, the facilities, the booster club bases, the ability to pay for special training and travel clubs, coupled with public schools need to still teach special needs kids and poor kids and kids with behavior issues....the list is ******* endless. Its not a debate, private schools have a serious advantage. I don't know why people even argue this?

Which 1A and 2A private schools are you talking about? All of them?

I remember talking about this with our principal when Dowling was on that 10-12 year football run. His response? We (public schools) have to be better. Quit complaining about the “advantages” private schools have and be better. And guess what happened? We did.

Heck, to give some perspective. Dowling won their first basketball tournament game since 1982. So, many of these issues have nothing to do with the advantages, it’s about getting the right folks in place. I woujd start with parents. Complaining about it is the easy way out.

Are special needs counted in the BEDs number? I did not think they were, but could be wrong.
