Hallice Cooke on Prohm

Thought this was interesting. We will never know what would have happened but adds to the idea that hiring Otz back then would have been better.

So he had a couple hours to make it to practice, and couldn't get there? It's Ames, you can walk anywhere in about 30 minutes.

It's weird to have him as an all time "what if transfer". He left here and averaged a whopping 4.7 pts/game at Nevada the following year.

Who knows where he lived? I mean when I was in school they practiced at Forker but he would have been in the new place. Getting out where the new facility would be a pain in the ass from campus town in bad weather.

Prohm should send TJ a fruit basket every Christmas for allowing us to forget about his tenure here. If TJ hadn’t cleaned up his mess this quickly he’d be remembered as the guy who killed Iowa State basketball. Now it’s just a short era you just pretend didn’t exist.

As interesting as it would be to see where the program would’ve been if TJ had gotten the job instead of Prohm, the college basketball landscape is considerably different now than it was then. I also think that TJ is smart enough to surround himself with coaches that make him and his players better. He may not have had the quality of assistants at the time, either. Hard to say, and we will never know, but if it took Prohm taking the reigns of the program for a few tough years to get to where we are now as a perennial Sweet 16 or better threat, I think that’s a trade most of us would make every day.

Prohm was a miss but i bet TJ would have suspended him too for being late.

Maybe or some sort of consequence.

I think the difference would be that TJ seems to be up front with what the standard is so it wouldn't be a surprise to the player, and CSP seemed pretty waffly in several aspects of his program.

I was a pretty big defender in his first two-three years but after hearing 'yeah I should have done that' for the umpteenth time after a loss among other things it was clear things weren't good.

TJ should send Prohm a fruit basket for setting the bar so low.

Didnt they mention something at the time about how that's the area where most students lived now?

I believe part of it also was a cost thing- being built on private land that was then donated to ISU allowed them to sidestep some costs that would have occurred if it was built on state-owned land

I don’t know why I remember this and maybe the picture is still out there but there was a picture of Steve Prohm playing in the Principal Charity Classic Pro-Am and he was wearing a golf glove that was 3 sizes too big and was dressed like a 1983 PGA golfer and I remember thinking “This guy is a dork…”
