Bill Fennelly

Here are some facts...
  • Our last regular season conference championship was 26 years ago
  • We have won only a single conference tournament championship since 2001
  • We have had only a single Sweet 16 appearance since 2010
  • We have not had an Elite 8 appearance since 2009
  • Our average Big 12 tournament seeding has been roughly a #5
  • NCAA tournament record since 2010 when ISU is favored (the higher seed): 7-5
  • NCAA tournament record since 2010 against teams seeded #9 or higher: 1-9
And let this one sink in...our last NCAA tournament win against a "top 20" team (defined as a 5 seed or better) was in 1999 against Connecticut (yes, THAT game). And since that game 27 years ago, an ISU women's basketball team has not won a single NCAA tournament game over a higher-seeded team.
To be fair, we were completely robbed of a win over Stanford 2 years ago. Refs rigged the game at the end to prevent VanDerveer from an upset during her final season of coaching. Reminded me of the FB loss at KSU/Snyderville when they waved off three flags.

I hope and pray they don't try to turn her into a "stand in the corner and shoot" player.
That was a silly post, I hope the poster was being sarcastic. Comito is a PG. Just hope she has the quickness to be a Big12 PG.

I am in the camp Bill deserves to decide when to retire. The game has passed him by a bit from a "need to recruit athlete" perspective. The part that confounds me, he always had an eye for recruiting really good perimeter players and our recruiting has been very inconsistent in that regard over the last 5 years or so.

On defense, Audi doesn't have the quickness to play man. And I think Addy is right there as well. Don't understand why we don't play zone 75+ percent of the time. I haven't seen many teams play really good zone defense when it is something they dabble with or play as a junk defense.

In regard to next coach, Bill has developed an elite program over the last 30 years. Consistent winner with awesome fan support. JP or whoever the AD, should go big game hunting! Go after an established P4 winner as first option. My hope, it is a female coach and a person that recruits quick, physical teams.

I hope he offers this freshman playing for Newell-Fonda (#11). shes fun to watch

No doubt that we were bad prior to BF. I'm just providing evidence that we have badly underperformed in the NCAA tournament for pretty much a quarter of a century. Also, we have had a Big 12 POY candidate for the past 12 years or so (Carleton, A Joens, Crooks) and have not really come close to winning a regular season conference crown.

I'm not sure that raising a program from the dead deserves a lifetime of unquestioned support.
We were a home win against Baylor away from winning the regular season in 21-22.

Elite programs don’t have the resume that Buckmester posted.

It's interesting how things come full circle. Bill ran an elite zone for the first decade plus of his time here until teams, in general, switched to man. He was blasted for not switching and he finally did. He's now using multiples - zone, box and one and man depending on the situation. Has the defense, again in general, been effective? No. Sometimes they do a decent job of shutting teams down and other times it's just an offensive race to see who can score the most. That will never win championships unless you have five elite scorers in the starting lineup and a couple more on the bench.

Being a top 3/4 Big12 program for 30 years is elite! Add to that 10k fans in Hilton, it's a VERY attractive job.
It depends what you define top 3/4. There were many years of not being in the top 4.

I would not call our performance in the last 15 years elite. Good, but the stretch from 2014-2018 was bad and very well could have been Bill’s end.

The excitement around the program the last 7 or 8 years has been based on potential. A couple elite recruiting classes. Unfortunately the potential hasn’t resulted in much realized success.

I really hope bill retires this off-season!

If he repeats next year, it could significantly damage what was a great career. Go out while you still can hold your head high!

I just finally got done watching the Iowa Michigan game because I was at a volleyball tournament all day…..

That was one of the most physical, defensively intense, basketball games, male or female I have ever witnessed. Defense is the key…. I’m giddy that Jan Jensen has emphasized defense once she took over the reigns. Those Michigan girls (who played terrific defense themselves) were shell shocked. I saw them interviewed after the game, and Kim Barnes Arico said she hoped they didn’t play Iowa again this year.

That’s the look teams have after leaving Hilton Coliseum, when the men play. I don’t ever remember the Iowa State women playing defense like that… Or hell the Iowa men or women either until this year :p

I guess elite can be subjective. What I’ve seen with my eyes doesn’t classify as elite, but maybe it does for you. Kudos to the fans for being engaged. It is a very attractive job and we should get good candidates when he decides to retire. Let’s hope it’s sooner rather than later.

Whether it’s been zone or man or one of Fennelly’s junk defenses, ISU has never been ball pressure, ball denying or disruptive. That’s because Bill does not like foul calls or his scorers in foul trouble. He doesn’t care about steals or turnovers that follow from a ball pressure defense.
Again this year, we’re last in the Big 12 in steals.

Big agree. To your point we’ve not been above #275th in turning over our opponents in the last 6 years.

This year was actually the best at #278. All the other years our best was #332 at turnover defense.

Yes ball pressure & physicality, up in their grill all game. It’s a thing of Joy watching the men play D. That’s defense.

For the Fire BF people out there, how many of our recruits and starters hit the portal if we do. I have seen people say we need a new coach for these players, but no one knows if or how many would actually stay if BF is gone. Which is the way things are now.

I can argue this on both sides and have no really strong feelings on it either way.

But I do think BF has earned the chance to go out when he chooses and on his own terms.

And I know there are a lot of programs out there that would kill for our record over the last 30 years. A lot more than would believe the opposite.

There is a huge risk to moving on to a new coach, players all hit the portal, we dont have the cash to go hire a proven winner, and would go hire a hopeful up and comer, that may or may not work out. If we hit lighting in a bottle, theres a good chance that person wont have the loyalty to our program.

I also know sometimes the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, but when you jump over you land in a pile of ****.

But I also wasnt one of those that wanted to fire Campbell at the first sign of adversity either.
