Bill Fennelly

It’s about continuity and what it does for a program. The ***** and moaners never comment when things are going well and come out in droves to gripe about anything they can grasp at related to the perceived failures of the staff. The latest ludicrous one that I responded to is that somehow the assistants are terrible because they have stayed at ISU and aren’t wanted elsewhere. So, to answer your question…does the same logic apply to the UConn assistant who hasn’t left to become a head coach after 40 years?
Didn't Bill say early in the seasons that he handed off responsibility for coaching the defense to his assistants? He was going hands off with it this year and letting them coach?

My gut feeling is next season will be Bill's last before he retires. I say this because if he were to retire or be pushed out now most of this roster would likely transfer out. I wouldn't be shocked if we lose a few to the portal regardless, but do you really want to potentially see players like Audi and AJ finish their career at another school when they are from Iowa and chose to play in state?

It's disappointing to see this team collapse 2 years in a row now with the talent they have. I get the frustration by fans and it frustrates me too. But be careful what you wish for because I would much rather see this current junior class stay at ISU and finish their careers as a Cyclone even if that means the possibility of another underperforming season than to see a complete reset of the program and those players playing in a different uniform. The way this roster is currently constructed the 27-28 season is setup to be a complete rebuild regardless of who is the coach is with 8 juniors on this current roster.
I’m not opposed to Bill staying to see the seniors off, but I want a new coach afterwards, not just giving the job to Billy. If that’s the plan, then Bill might as well stay and ride the bus down the hill, because IMO nothing will change if Billy is the new coach

LOL no way in hell JP is handing the keys to Billy. That ship has sailed.

I seem to recall you being one of those who shouted people down who were pointing out the very things that could (and did) cause this program to struggle down the stretch, telling them to just enjoy the wins against poor competition.

You can't have it both ways. You can't come after people for having criticism after wins and criticize them if they only share their criticism after losses. You just don't want to hear anything but positive comments regardless of how things are going.

At one point in time I think he would have. He’s already set the precedent with TJ and JFR that he wants head coaching experience- if he went back on that just to make Bill and Billy happy, there will be a pretty significant backlash to that decision

regressed? How?
25-26
28 min, 44% shooting (198 attempts), 36% three (70 attempts), 79% ft, 12.2ppg, 9 boards

24-25
32 min 48% (396), 36% three (127), 76% ft, 15.2 ppg 8 rebounds

23-24
33 min, 47%(346), 38%,l(134), 74%, 13ppg 8 rebounds

Looks like remarkable consistency by the player to me
Shouldn't we see growth from her freshman year to her junior year. I understand her injury affected her numbers this year, but it is hard to say this group of players have improved significantly over the last two years. After Audi, Addy, and AJ's freshman season we all expected this group to grow and do remarkable things. It just hasn't happened to this point. I feel bad for them.

I don't see Jamie and Bill working out anything together. The rumblings around the program have suggested a rift around Billy taking over for 5 years now.
They don't really have much to work out. The money is the same whether:
  • They come to an agreement for him to retire at the end of March 2027 with full bonus payment
  • ISU lets him go in March 2027 against his will, and he contractually receives his full bonus payment
  • ISU waits until his contract expires at the end of June 2027, and he contractually receives his full bonus payment
I'm assuming the extra three months doesn't mean a difference of three months of salary (I'm not sure how these contracts are structured, but I assume he gets his full annual salary either way).

The only difference is whether he "retires", he is "let go", or he is "not renewed". I assume everyone involved here wants this to end with a retirement.

It was never going to happen under JP.

Lol is this secretly CW's burner who wanted Tom Manning as our next HC?
Haha I didn't realize my take was so bad. I want BF gone but would love to retain most of the players that see minutes. Thought maybe Billy might be able to change some things. I don't feel that strongly about him being a quality head coach though.

Also, eww Tom Manning

I think it speaks volumes that BF's entire staff has NOT moved on....EVER. No one has been targeted for other coaching positions nor do I get the impression they ever wanted to test the waters and spread their wings a bit.

I feel as though our assistants on this team bring virtually nothing to the table. It's either that or whatever they do bring to the table is shot down by BF but I'd wager on the former.
Jack Easley (sp?) went to Oklahoma State. If I remember correctly he was the associate head coach when he left.

Edit: didn't seem him mentioned until a few pages later.

There is 0.0% reason to keep Bill Fennelly, period... Allow him to retire with grace after March Madness and have Jamie hire the replacement THIS OFFSEASON.

Anyone who says we should see let Bill coach the team one more year with the soon to be seniors... What in the past two years leads you to believe that a third year is going to be different? At least give the new coach a chance to have a decent foundation to re-recruit with a more structure.

Both the NDSU and SDSU coaches should be high on the list. NDSU coach would likely bring the summit league player of the year with him and the SDSU coach has been outright DOMINANT in the conference, including two NCAA wins in 2023 and 2025.

I can speak to the "carlisle gal". She is everything you want a PG to be. Really good ball handler, can get to the rim, makes her FTs and can hit the 3. Her basketball IQ is really high and she is on the Iowa Attack top team so she has traveled the country playing against top competition.

The only thing she cares about is winning. She average right around 20 points a game but that could have easily been 30 if she wanted to and the team wasnt blowing other teams out.

Here is a tidbit for you-Fennelly asked one of her family members at a game if she was left handed because she goes left flawlessly and can score. She is right handed.

No one really knows how many offers she received because thats not her or her families style. They are really REALLY great people and just dont feel the need to "brag" or put out such info. Guessing Macy was in the low teens with offers though. She is a talent and will be a fan favorite.

Per this very site, she has at least this many offers….

The 5-foot-10 prospect chose Iowa State over offers from Drake, Butler, Belmont, DePaul, Marquette, Bradley, Eastern Illinois, South Dakota, Utah State, Cleveland State and Fairfield.

So yes, I would assume she probably has 14 15 16 offers from various programs

Easy fir internet fans to say let Bill go now, but not so easy for the AD. 30 year head coach at ISU, winningest ISU head coach, winningest Big 12 head coach, currently top 15 in all time wins, I think currently 3rd active in wins. Easy for us to say let him go, doing that in reality is a bit more difficult.

Johnston has been successful for a VERY long time at SDSU. You'd think he's already had plenty of chances to move up. I suspect he's an SDSU lifer.

I don't know much about Collins at NDSU, but he's certainly done a good job there.

I'll close by saying I get the financial challenges in this current environment and we can only invest so much in WWB, which breaks even at best. That doesn't mean we have to settle for a coach who is past his prime and refuses to adjust.
Women’s basketball is by far our biggest “money loser” among all sports.
It loses over $4 mil every year. Last year it lost $4.5 million.
